Friday.....Pokey La Farge....he put on a really great show....he is ol' timey swing, jazz, country...A group of cute girls were dancing right beside and in front if me and we were really packed into the bar. My wife likes to have her own space so I did my duty and stood between her and the girls and had to but up with them bumping and rubbing into me all night.....over and over.....I accidentally touched several butts....accidentally.....just doing my husbandly duty.
A Local band that I really like called Whiskey Folk Ramblers opened. They are sort of a Texas version of the Pogues.
As we were leaving the bar, Mickey Gilley was walking in with his entourage. Couldn't get my phone out quick enough to take a pic...but he was being propped up by a person on either side of him and looked really old. We went home and watched Urban Cowboy.
Saturday I walked up the street to Good Records for record store day:
Steve Earle
Pleasant Grove....a local band...now living in Austin I think. I loved them years ago then they got esoteric and shitty. But they were rocking saturday.
Went and got something to eat and a thunderstorm came through. Tornado sirens were going off but I really wanted to see John Congleton, a local guy but he doesn't play live much anymore. He produces a lot of other artists records including St Vincent ,David Byrne, Sigur Ros and has won a grammy . I saw him a few years ago with his band Paper Chase and it is still one of the best shows I've ever seen. He is super intense....manic.....and rocks with a lot of syncopated rhythms and disjointed chord progressions. He was just as intense this time but it was just him and his electric guitar and a guy playing keyboards/ synth. Great show.
I was gonna leave but it was still raining and then I discovered they had a keg of Deep Ellum IPA they were pouring for free so I stuck around for the next band.....Moon Waves I think was their name.....knob turners with mega effects....meh...learn to play an instrument.
Rain finally ended and the place next door had just tapped Bear Republic Hop Shovel so I walked over there for a night cap.
Have Father John Misty on Wednesday....

Nice write up Zappa. Would love to see Stevie Earle.
I'm jealous of the Father John Misty coming up. He is coming to New Orleans soon, but I already bought tickets to Dead Feat that night, before it was announced.

Nice... I had a good music weekend myself
Fri -- Steve Earl in Gruene (I really enjoyed hearing his new blues stuff)
Sat -- Old Settlers Festival (REK headliner, Jeff Austin Band, Lost Bayou Ramblers, JD McPherson are the acts I saw) It stormed for an hour right before REK was supposed to come on, pushed him back an hour, but everyone left and made for a great setting for a late night festie show.
Sun -- Neil Diamond I will turn in my man card here. My dad was in town and I got free tickets off the radio. I tried to sell them but no luck. We went and laughed at all the people going crazy and left early.
All in all a great weekend, even with the Sunday night event
