Michael Jackson had at least 13 U.S. number 1 hits as an adult & was the sole writer of but 3( Man/Mirror/ Rock With You/ You are Not Alone).

MJ sole composer #1's

Beat it & Billie Jean ( 2 most successful singles by far & MJ sole writer)

Way You Make me Feel
Dirty Diana
Don't Stop / Get Enough
Can't Stop loving you
Black /White
Bad
We Are the World( Richie CO write ,but acknowledges a Jackson song)

And dozens of other top ten hits as sole composer:

Girl/Mine
Wanna be Starting Somethin
Will you be There
Smooth Criminal
You Rock my World
Working Day & Night
They don't care about us
Earth Song
Stranger In Moscow ( best ballad)
Who is it
Heal World

Sole writer & producer of Diana Ross final top 10 hit "Muscles"

And co writer of dozens of others going back to the Jackson era with his Brothers.

Myth that he just showed up & sang / dance. Jackson singularly wrote the overwhelming majority of his most successful songs.

I actually cant believe this. If this dude was that off in his head where he thought like a kid in many ways, then how can one believe he was capable of writing hits

He was a prolific songwriter - no question. But, I reiterate, he was more about the performance (and this is not necessarily derogatory - he was ahead of his time, to a degree. There were rock bands who really got into the live thing, Pink Floyd and Kiss notably, but plenty of others - but MJ was the model on which MTV was founded - a performer who could sing, dance, put on a spectacle) than the song. In the end, most of his stuff was not my cup of tea.

Prince's stuff was - especially in the early/mid 1980s.

No doubt.

Mozart has nothing to fear from MJs discography ,but I was only responding to the repeated falsehood that MJ never wrote his own music which he did.

The issue is not personal preferences as I like Prince as well .

MJ is in the Smokey Robinson category. Both good Songwriters, but not " Musicians / Musicians" since neither played instruments proficiently.

So who do you believe are the ghostwriters of his songs that gave MJ over $500 million dollars or more worth of music?

It's the music BUSINESS & not a charity.

Only a Fool would give away hundreds of millions of dollars to Jackson without didpute.

No one who has worked with Jackson has ever disputed his songwriting skills.

Owned his publisdhing(MJJ productions) , owned Sony ATV (Beatles Catalogue) & nearly purchased Marvel Comics.

MJ wasd no complete rube. He was just an emotional wreck.

From what I read, the "Bad" album was originally supposed to be a 30 song, 3-LP set until Quincy Jones and possibly Epic persuaded MJ to make it a single album. Apparently, Mike wrote and recorded like 60 songs during this period. Some of which have never seen the light of day.

I don't doubt this. Just as the talk of Prince having dozens (if not hundreds) of songs locked away.

Difference is - I LIKE most of the stuff Prince released. I didn't like what they put out on Bad. I'm supposed to get excited about what didn't make the final cut?

That's the issue. MJ was an entertainer who used music. Prince was a (brilliant, really a prodigy on the keys AND guitar) musician who entertained.

It really shows through his lyrics and sound of his songs. Prince probably writes the most creative lyrics I've come across this side of Lennon/McCartney and Townshend and the sound is particularly remarkable in that everything is solely from Prince. Just amazing.

Jackson achieved his writing credits the same as Garth Brooks. Again, you're talking about lyrics here and for me personally, I never deemed just lyrics to be a complete song and was always more impressed with melody.

He wrote the lyrics, went into the studio, showed them to the old man, old man probably sat down at the piano with MJ and hammered out the melody. Old man then transposed, arranged and produced said tracks with his band of immortal studio guys.

Good for MJ, he was a very talented soul but if this is in response to Prince being considered a better songwriter, I'm afraid he's still not even in the same league as Prince.

Says who ?

The old Man ( Quincy Jones)? A Middle age Jazz musician who is mostly incapable of writing pop music?

1) Are you implying Quincy Jones is a damn fool?

2 ) Quincy Jones is the most charitable person in the history of the music industry?

He simply give Michael Jackson $500 million dollars worth of music & CO producer credit?

3) Quincy Jones has never claimed a note of MJs music credits & openly praises his unique songwriting skills.

MJ has the demos to prove his work.

You are foolish & making foolish assumptions .

Eta. No it's a response to your type of ignorance regarding MJs talent.

And could you give me the long list of songs ( non Jazz) that Quincy Jones wrote in his 50 plus year musical career?

Point well taken.

On the thriler 25th anniversary album Quincy Jones says MJ usually brought about 15- 20 original demos. Some of them maybe reworks of older songs rejected for a previous album . So he certainly wasn't as prolific as a Prince.

Prince was easily a a more prolific writer ,but MJ is a vastly underrated/ underappreciated Songwriter & Quincy Jones addresses this.

Google Michael Jacksons brilliant "Beat it" demo online to see how he crafted a song . The human voice is an instrument.

Steve Stevens (Guitarist on Dirty Diana) told how Michael Jackson hummed every single bar , note for note several hours until he got the song just like Michael ' wrote it'. Except for solos which MJ let the musicians do what they pleased.
