Why is this genre controversial? I wasn't really into it when it came out but have read where it's kinda polarizing. Anyone have an idea why?

Some people can look past the screaming intelligible vocals, and some can't. I cannot, therefor I don't like it.
A scream is like an exclamation mark or a curse word. If you use it too often, it loses all its meaning. If everything is double fortissimo, than nothing is. You have to have rises and falls for the highs to have meaning. Metalcore is typically all highs. Just not my thing. A little screaming at the right place goes a long way.

All the metalcore band names consisting of a complete sentence are worse than the actual music

I can agree that some of the names are ridiculous. I got into Shadows Fall about 12-13 years ago, and that's what sort of introduced me to this genre. However, Shadows Fall strikes me as a bit different.

I like Shadows Fall, wouldn't consider them metalcore. As for why metalcore sucks, I'll let Brian Posehn explain it LINK

Shadows Fall seems more thrash than metalcore now that you mentioned it.

The only redeeming thing metalcore ever brought to the world was crabcore gifs.

Its basically shitty Killswitch Engage ripoffs. Vocals tend to be harsh verse, clean chorus. The music is based around the breakdown in the middle of the song, no solos or anything technical. Its all about bringing the sick mosh, good music is secondary. Oh and the "moshing" consists mainly of spin kicks and other karate moves. The fans tend to wear skinny jeans, have emo hair, and a ton of piercings.

I will admit there's a few I like but I tend to gravitate more towards straight up metal and hard rock. It seems as though Nu Metal passed the punchline torch to metalcore. There are a few bands that have credibility (Killswitch Engage, Hatebreed, As I Lay Dying) but others appear to gravitated toward other styles (Shadows Fall, Trivium, Bullet For My Valentine).
