MB musicians: Buying an instrument for someone

My GF wants a mandolin. She doesn't know how to play, but is musically gifted and could pick it up easily. I've thought about surprising her, but it occurs to me a musical instrument is probably something someone needs to pick out for themselves. Thoughts?

If you're going to guitar center or local music store, I would do a pretext that you need something, picks, strap, reeds, oil, WTF ever. Then get there and say, "Okay, let's find you a mandolin."
What's wrong with doing it like that?

The more I think it about it the more I like it - it's a shared experience, as well as tangible gift. The best of both worlds.

The short answer is don't.
Unless you're getting a small keyboard, a ukulele, or a harmonica for a child, you're just going to spend a lot of money with little reward.

How about this?
Go to several different stores, let her pick out a favorite in each place.Don't buy it when she is there. Surprise her later.
Use this plan when buying jewelry also.

In highschool I bought my GF a cello as a college gift.
Learned my lesson on that one.

Ace has the right idea. Get her to the music store and start looking. Or say, "Hey, let's get you a birthday present while we're here".
BTW, Ace, I was in your area Thursday, visiting my Mom in her nursing home in Alexandria.
