I have to recommend a place to hear live jazz in New Orleans to a friend of mine. But I'm not plugged into that scene.

Can any of you recommend a live jazz venue that's the real deal? Not necessarily tourist bait. He's looking for the good stuff that might be out of the way.

I told him I don't know, but I know where to ask.

Thanks!

Snug Harbor on Frenchman; Irvin Mayfield's on Bourbon; Julius Kimbrough's Prime Example on Broad all fit the bill.

Really?

First poster had good ideas--you can park and just walk the few blocks of Frenchman Street and see all the music you need.

This article on Travel and Leisure gives another good short list. If you're looking for Dixieland I'd also give Palm Court Cafe on Decature a try.
