Apparently the new record that Jason was teasing is a record with his band.

Anyways, the new record comes out in "summer."

There will be a live EP available on Record Store Day on 4/22, "Live from Welcome to 1979"

Story and dates here:

I think I'm going to Austin.

ETA:
quote:

"The album is topical, current, a record of time passed," Jason Isbell says of his newly finished follow-up to 2015's Something More Than Free. Recorded last month during a two-week stint at producer Dave Cobb's RCA Studio A, the record relies not only on Isbell's writing, but on the full power of his band, the 400 Unit, whose contributions take a front-seat role.

"Lyrics and melody are still the driving force behind what we're doing," he tells Rolling Stone, "but this time around, there's more of a rock and roll influence. You might shed some tears, but for once there's a chance you might also dance a little."

Nice. If the new stuff is anything like "Palmetto Rose", I'm excited.

I love Jason Isbell, but I like him best when he's depressing and mellow. Just me?

Elephant, Relatviely Easy, Cover Me Up, etc

Now something like Pametto Rose and The Life You Chose are great more up-beat material.

Yeah, I'm not sure how to take this really, but he has earned the benefit of the doubt at this point.

Think of his DBT "Rock" material like "Never Gonna Change." The teaser they posted sounds good.

He won't disappoint.

You do know that all of his albums whether listed as Jason Isbell or Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit are all the same band, right with the exception of his first album Sirens of the Ditch? Buddy of mine from high school, Chad Gamble, is Jason's drummer.

ETA: Above was posted before I read the article. That article was just worded strange to me like his "solo" albums, as they put it, and the 400 Unit albums are 2 totally different bands.

Gonna have to try and push my next R&R from Afghanistan from Sept to Nov so I can see them live at the Paradiso in Amsterdam.

from what i gather, they are the same players but they, too a degree, keep a line of differentiation between the two projects. i dont know if its in the writing process, or just that theyve evolved their relationship and decided to make it a full team credit but theres some differentiation.

I will say that i am way on board for this. it feels like the right time, and ive been saying for months that a "concept" album that is more southern rock would really be a fun project and help round out the live shows. Doing the old DBT "never gonna change" that was written for 3 guitars, and some covers to get that punch was fine but i think itll be much better to have some JI400 rock and roll to incorporate.

Same band for sure, but leading up to when they went in studio, he emphasized that he was 'making a record with his rock and roll band.'

I like the really deep stuff as much as anyone, but his catalog has gotten a little lopsided that way. Really, really looking forward to more stuff kinda like 'Go it alone'

Chad and Al Gamble were both fraternity brothers of mine at Bama--chad 2 years younger and Al 2 years older than me. I hook up with Al whenever St.Paul plays in NOLA or BR. I last saw Chad backstage at JazzFest after their show a couple years ago.

Al graduated around the same time my sister did. Chad graduated a year or 2 after I did. They are both great guys!!!
