Wow if those are the absolute best photos you can find of her, then I am right.

Don Imus: "Is it true that you slept with Janis Joplin?"
Dick Cavett: "I believe it was the other way around."

The Rose

Loosely (and I mean loosely) based. Janis's family refused to give Hollywood the right to crap all over her life story.

A good place to start would be the biography Love, Janis written by her sister.

I was going to RA about the pic but then thought of it as more akin to tribal attire in a National Geographic.

I don't think Hollywood wrote the book. They did buy the rights to the book and title, then didn't follow it.

I beg to differ.

Janis definitely was not a physically beautiful woman but the way she sang on stage made all the men in the audience fall in love with her anyway.

She was my favorite performer ever and I still miss her after all these years.

Another good movie that has her singing some of her songs is Festival Express.

I was lucky enough to get to see her at the Toronto concert that was the first concert at the start of the train trip across Canada.

About ten minutes into the film they have a split scene and in the left screen it shows two dudes jumping over the fence trying to get into the concert for free.

I am the second dude.

Then the scene changes and you can see me being "escorted" out of the stadium by two police officers.

Just before the two cops and I reached the exit a third cop came up from behind and shoved me.

If you look closely you can see me turn around and say something to the cop who shoved me.

What I said was something like "Hey man, you didn't have to shove me. I'm leaving peacefully."

That night I paid to get into the concert just to see Janis sing.

That was the last time I ever saw Janis perform live.

Later in the day after I got "escorted" out of the stadium, I was walking down a wide straight sidewalk just outside of the stadium that was completely empty except for one person who was standing in the middle of the sidewalk about 50 yards in front of me.

As I walked closer, I noticed that it was a guy with black hair who was playing a guitar to himself.

When I got closer to him, I got a better idea what he looked like and I thought to myself, "Damn, that looks like Jerry Garcia." Then as I got about 50 feet away from him I thought to myself, "Damn, that IS Jerry Garcia!"

I quickly walked up to him and stood right next to him while he continued to play his guitar just for me.

I stood there listening to Jerry and enjoying the fact that he was playing his guitar just for me.

A few minutes later, one or two other people noticed it was Jerry Garcia and they also stood there listening to him.

All of a sudden, one of the other band members walked up to Jerry on the other side than the side I was standing and began to jam along with Jerry.

Then more people noticed what was happening and stood around listening to the two of them jam.

Right after that, another member of the band walked up to Jerry and the other band member and also started to jam with them.

More people noticed what was happening and came over to listen to them.

Then the rest of the band showed up and joined the three of them and before I knew it, I was standing right next to Jerry while he and the entire band played for about an hour on that sidewalk.

Finally, when there was a huge crowd listening to them, Jerry stopped playing and told the crowd to follow him to the park where he and the band were going to give a free show for everyone who couldn't afford to buy a ticket to get into the stadium for the concert.

By that time, I was so blown away from standing right next to Jerry and listening to him and the rest of the band perform for about an hour that I decided not to follow the band to the park so I just walked back to my friends and told them what had just happened to me.

To this day, I consider it one of the greatest experiences I have ever had.

Yup, that's me 46 years ago.

Here's more of the story.

I was living in Buffalo at the time and my friend and I went to Toronto to go to the concert but when we got there we noticed about 100 people outside the stadium hanging around. We went over to see what was happening and it turned out to be a bunch of Canadians thinking about jumping over the fence. I told them that I was an American so I wasn't going to be the first one to jump over the gate but I would follow whoever was the first one to jump over.

The plan was that after I jumped over then everyone else would follow me.

The dude with the hat said he would go first so he and I got on the top of the fence and got ready to jump over the fence as soon as the security cop walked past us.

When I was on the top of the fence I noticed there was a barb wire about a foot above the top of the fence that we had to jump over so I put one foot on the barb wire and I planned to push off on that foot and jump onto the field then run as fast as I could into the middle of the crowd so the cops couldn't follow me and catch me.

When the security cop walked by, the guy in the hat jumped over and I followed but I lost balance when I pushed off of the barb wire and I landed hard on the heel of one of my feet.

Then I took a quick glance back to see if anyone was following me but no one was so I thought to myself "shite, no one is following me so I'm going to get caught."

At the time, I was pissed because I thought everyone was chickening out but after I realized it was me in the movie I remembered that in the movie they said several cops on horses charged into the crowd and chased everyone away from the fence.

I started to run but as soon as I took one step with the foot I landed on I felt incredible pain in my foot.

If you look closely you can see my face react to the pain and me limping slightly as I tried to run but not put weight on the foot.

When I looked up to see where I was going to run, I noticed a guy kneeling on the ground holding a huge camera that he was pointing directly at me.

I thought to myself, "Who is this guy and why is he filming me?"

I ran past him and tried to run into the middle of the crowd but my foot hurt so bad I could hardly run.

Just before I made it to the crowd on the field I felt one of the security cops tackle me from behind and it was all over.

I told the security cop that he caught me fair and square and I wasn't going to resist so he said that he was only going to eject me from the stadium but he wasn't going to arrest me because I was cooperating with him.

Then the second cop came up and both of them started to "escort" me out of the stadium. As they did we were having a friendly chat when the third cop came behind me and shoved me in the back for no reason. That's when I turned around and told the third cop that he didn't have to shove me because I was leaving peacefully.

Now fast forward about 40 years when I rented the Festival Express video from BlockBuster because I had never heard of it and it said it was a video of Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, The Band, and other great bands.

After the first time I watched the part where the video showed two guys jumping over the fence, I turned to my brother and said to him, "that reminds me of the time I jumped over the fence at a concert I went to in Toronto.

I didn't even realize at first that it was me in the video but when I noticed later that the video contained a concert in Toronto, I put 2 and 2 together and realized that it was me.

So after 40 years, the mystery of why the guy with the big camera was filming me was answered.

That really is a cool story bro.

Your jumping the fence trumps mine. I jumped the fence at Astroworld in '89 to see New Order.
