The Velvet Underground are cooler than the Rolling Stones because they released a few awesome albums and then split up before they even approached being stale

The Stones removed all dignity by releasing decades of crap by holding on too long

What's not to love of the Crue? Drugs? Booze? Women? Sex tapes?

Some more arguably cooler bands.

The Band was cooler. It's Bob Dylan's band, and they were great on their own. They had cool band members, partied with the best of them and had their final concert produced by Scorsese. Special guests for the concert: Dylan, Morrison, Clapton, Young, Mitchell, Ringo, Dr John, Muddy Waters, Diamond, etc.

Lou Reed put out his fair share of horrible releases.

While on the subject, John Cale has an underrated solo career.

Yea those guys look REAL cool

They were. Probably the number one band I would want to party with in their prime. They put anyone else to shame. Their stage persona sucked though.

I had a "Paris 1919 Appreciation Thread" typed all the way up and about to press submit a week or so ago

Didn't think I'd get much response, didn't post

But yea solo John Cale rules. I'd almost say he had a better solo career than Reed did. Outside of Transformer most of it is pretty forgettable.

The Velvet Underground was just too soft to make them the coolest of all time. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan and do think they have a certain coolness and edge to them. But it's kind of a faux-toughness...an Anthony Bourdain toughness if that makes sense.

The fact that Ronnie Van Zant, by himself, could have thoroughly and exhaustively kicked Lou Reed, Cale, and the other band member's teeth in with a bottle of Jack in one hand removes Velvet Underground from the "coolest of all time" category.
