Is it possible that the Beatles are a bit overrated?

Might get crucified by this board, but I'm not saying "Do the Beatles suck?" No, of course they don't. I think they're great but the "greatest album" thread made me take a look at some greatest albums of all time lists and every single Beatles and Bob Dylan album seems to be in the top 20. It's almost as if they're worshipped as Gods of music and I just don't get it. I think they're basically the first "pop band", which is fine but I don't think they're musical Gods many think them up to be.
Is it possible that people simply remember a time when music was actually good, and this is just nostalgia at work? I mean, pretty much the entire top 50 of Rolling Stones' list was made between 1960-75. It's almost to the point where even simply posing this question seems blasphemous, but does it seem that the Beatles and Bob Dylan get a little too much credit? Sure, they've got a couple of the greatest all time albums, but 7 of the top 10 all time? C'mon

No. Their stratospheric greatness is well deserved.

No, I don't think so. I'm not a huge Beatles fan but when you look at their albums and realize there are so few songs that suck or would be considered filler, it's really pretty amazing.

I love The Beatles, but even I have to agree that they are a LITTLE overrated.

the Beatles
4 dudes from a shithole in England taught themselves how to play and how to write then went out and changed the world, forever altering the way popular music and its composition would be derived, performed and enjoyed
you cannot overrate that accomplishment

Not saying they're bad or anything, but I think a lot of people like the Beatles just because everyone says they're good and you should like them.

Yea, that's basically what I'm trying to point out.

Yes they're overrated, but they are still the best by a substantial amount.

No, not the best band but the band with the most influence on music.

I can't stand the Beatles.

No, because the Beatles are like 4 bands in one. The Beatles you hear on "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" is nothing like "Sgt. Peppers", which is nothing like "Revolver", which is nothing like "Abby Road". The shear volume of music they produced in such a short time, the depth of its quality, the breadth of its variety, their innovations in recording and creating sound, and the fact that they literally spawned multiple genres of music with their B-sides is why they deserve every ounce of the respect they're given.
Any band can have a "Yesterday" or an "Elenor Rigby", but not both, and certainly not with also a "Get Back", a "Heltar Skeltar", a "I Want You", a "Hey Jude", an "If I Fell", "A Day in the Life", and a "Something in the Way". That kind of ability to change complete genres so many times with such quality in the span of what, 7 years? That's unbelievable!

It's all subjective. But I've never owned, nor will ever own a Beatles album.

According to what? Their influence? IMHO Sgt Pepper is not the GOAT album, or even their best. I also think John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band album is as good as anything The Beatles ever did.
This is just people not liking something and being pissed off other people consider it the best. I fell the exact same way about:
Zep
Seinfeld
Shawshank
Tom Brady
Obama

To say that they are overrated, you would have to have definitive evidence of it and since the notion of a "rating" is very vague and subjective you have to figure anybody asserting that (at the very least) one of the most influential, trailblazing and blatantly imitated musical entities of all time, is kind of trying to customize the idea of how a consensus works in order to justify their own poor objectivity.
If the greatest musical scholars and most learned and erudite appreciators unanimously give the Beatles high marks and your particular opinion stands opposed to that, you may just have to accept that the problem is with your own perception.

Those 4 guys plus George Martin made history. Most of you did not grow up in the '60's to see it as it happened. They were amazing times, and I couldn't wait to run down to the TG&Y to get the new Beatles rekkid. They changed my life with their music. They were the best!

Great, sure. Reality meeting the mythology? Would be tough.
