Billboard and Sterogum think so. Some quotes from the Billboard article
quote:

"We announced Ozzfest Meets Knotfest and the original Misfits reunion on the same day and literally the media world exploded," marvels Brennan. "We were No. 1 trending topics all over the world, and took over every form of media out there. Not bad for what many thought was a dying genre."

quote:

A rock fest branding platform DWP calls "The World's Loudest Month," with fests running every weekend from late April through May, moved 500,000 tickets this year for such events as Fort Rock in Ft. Meyers, Fla., Welcome to Rockville in Jacksonville, Fla.; Carolina Rebellion in Charlotte, N.C.; Northern Invasion in Somerset, Wis.; Rock on the Range in Columbus, Ohio, and Rocklahoma in Pryor, Okla. Still to come are DWP-produced or co-produced events Louder Than Life (Louisville, Ky.), Aftershock (Sacramento) and Rock Allegiance (Chester, Pa.)., the latter two sponsored by Monster Energy.

quote:

"You get outside of L.A. and New York, there's a lot of nooks and crannies out there," says AEG Live promoter/produce Joe Litvag, who directs the promoter's festivals in that genre. "There are rock fans in every one of those nooks and crannies, and our job is to speak to them. We embrace the black T-shirts."

Adds Brennan: "The fact that L.A. and New York have no rock radio station blows my mind. Sponsors, brands and media may think that Tame Impala and X Ambassadors are sexy and exciting to talk about, but the rest of the country couldn't give two shits."

This is the heart of it I think. There are a lot of people in middle America that don't care what hipsters in New York and LA say is trendy or cool.

quote:

The economics are another positive as the talent pool offers up scores of acts with significant name recognition but not the hefty price tags. "A lot of these bands have been around for a long time, they've got very loyal and rabid fan bases that come out and support their bands," says Litvag, who believes affordable pricing allows producers to stack the deck without busting the budget. "Avenged Sevenfold, Slipknot, those bands work in our financial model and -- in the past at least -- bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers just don't," he adds. "Ultimately, it allows us to keep our financial model in check and not have to jack ticket prices up so much to where we have to leave our fans at home because they can't afford to come. That would be a devastating blow if we did that."

quote:

Metallica, too, remains on the wish list, he says, "but we have to worry about the price."

Another important factor in these festivals' success is they don't break the bank for someone like Metallica or Iron Maiden and can instead offer a solid overall lineup. Metallica has played Bonnaroo, Voodoo, and Lollapalooza which don't really cater to the average Metallica, or hard rock, fan.

I've been telling you that there still exists a market, but the media isn't satisfying it and there's not enough bands that have gotten the requisite media exposure to catch on, causing there to be a massive shortage of headliners. That's why Nickelback and washed up 70's and 80's has-beens still can command top dollar. There's a ton of great bands out there, but the media infrastructure is lacking for getting them out of the underground and into the mainstream of popular culture. Yeah, nerds like us know The Sword, Anders Osborne, Crash Kings, Royal Teeth, ect, but 9 out of 10 people on the street have no clue who any of them are, yet at least 6 of them know Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, and Cheap Trick.

Great point. But you seem young and have NO clue about when this all started... Bands in the late 60's and early 70's set the stage for what is going on now.... It all depends on when you grew up and what was important to YOUR time........

This is why ROTR getting RHCP this year is a big deal. People might not come out to see Clutch or Ghost, but they will come out to see RHCP. I like the idea of mixing in alternative bands like that. It exposes the mainstream crowd to bands they may not have heard of.

I have no problem with that. YOU seem to though. Great music was born back in the 50's. What YOU think is great means homework has to be done. Just listen from then until now and you will see... Just trying to give you some perspective....

I hope so. I've always seen younger people drawn to it. I suppose in large urban centers which pretty much drive what is seen as popular, it's not as hip.

I'm looking forward to a reunited ATDI as much as anyone, but the Litvag guy didn't need to rag on Tame Impala, that's a damn good neo-psych band, and had one of the year's best records along with Courtney Barnett this past year.

Now, his remark about X-Ambassadors and their hype, I agree with..not impressed at all with the three Youtube vids I watched a month ago.
