Basically every hard rock and metal band that came out in the late 90's got lumped into the nu metal genre whether it fit them or not.

Yep.

Some people just have to hate something, so they created a genre, threw all hard rock during that period onto the fray and hated on them/it. I think pop country is the new thing to rage on at the present time.

The late 90's was a spawn of the early and mid 90's. You go from The Melvins, Mudhoney, Nirvana, Soundgarden, AIC and that moprhs into Candlebox, Creed, Fuse, Silverchair, and Bush which morphs into Godsmack, Jawbreaker, Deftones, Limp Bizkit, etc.

Korn is the only band who was playing the nu-metal sound in a commercial atmosphere during 1995-96. All else enjoyed commercial success after.

Nu-metal sucks but the genre did give us some good music videos. LINK
