Hozier must have gone to the same songwriting school as Sam Smith

Take Me to Church is Have a Cigar.

Irish recording artist Hozier's single Take Me to Church (released September 16, 2013) is reminiscent of seminal British rockers Pink Floyd's Have a Cigar (released November 15 1975). Both songs are in the key of Eminor, and feature somewhat similar progressions (TMtC: i-iv-i-iv-III-iv-i; HaC: i-VI-VII-i)--Have a Cigar uses C major rather than TMtC's relative A minor. However, there is no mistaking TMtC's descending chromatic guitar riff starting on the G note: G-F#-F#-F-E, as being a direct copy of David Gilmour's original from Have a Cigar. Gilmour's riff is also imitated in Coldplay's Violet Hill (released May 9, 2008), though it has been shifted a half step lower (i.e. starting on the F# note). The chorus vocal melody/progression for Take Me to Church is also similar to the chorus vocal melody/progression for Joe Cocker's You Are So Beautiful.

A bit of a stretch if you ask me.
Fwiw I didn't think sam smith's song sounded like Tom petty's.
With as much music that gets created around the world its no surprise people write songs that sound somewhat similar. There are only so many chord progressions you can come up with. Should a blues artist have to credit every artist that used the 12 bar i-iv-v progressions before him?

quote:similar chord progression? dumb. tons of songs have very similar or the exact same chord progressions either in the same key or a transposed key. same melody? that'd be a problem. the melody is more important to having a unique song IMO. but these two songs have completely different melodies.
Take Me to Church is Have a Cigar.
smith had a similar melody to petty, that's why it was even an issue.
quote:do you think this is true? i don't think the melodies to those two songs are remotely close at all.

There's just nothing that hasn't been done chord progression/melody wise. Everything is going to sound like something else.
There's no limitations in lyrics, that's why copying someone else's words is a far greater crime imo.

This is absolutely untrue. The issue is using a standard four note progression with minimal dynamics.\ Pachelbel Rant
