How important is a band's name?

My buddy has been playing music for close to 30 years, he's been in several bands.
His latest project is a year in the making and they're getting some really great feedback from places they've played.
They took on some new members and decided to change the name. The name makes them sound like a death metal band Which they are definitely NOT.
They strictly play blues, old rock and new originals.
How bad does a strange name turn you off to a band?

Not that important, the most popular band in history was named after one of the ugliest looking insects.

I would really like a hard rock band named "Lugnut", even if the music was just OK, because "Lugnut" is the greatest name for a rock band.

My wife and I were stoned when we made our band on the game Rock Band and named it 'Significant Shrinkage' because of the Seinfeld episode where the chick walks in on George after he ahd gottn outta the pool.

The name of a band is very important, IMO.
Two examples:
10,000 Maniacs
Garbage
I think both could have been much bigger if they had "more appropriate" names.

I keep hearing that Diarrhea Planet is a good band, but I don't really want to listen to them because of the name.

In my opinion, the name should "feel" like their genre. If it "feels" like an opposite genre, it will turn away potential fans because those that like the genre it "feels" like may not like the genre it actually is. Those that actually like that genre will avoid that band because their name leads them to believe that they are something else entirely.
Could you imagine a band lake "Slayer" playing Pop/punk or acoustic folk?
Does Panic at the Disco sound like a death metal group?
Could you imagine a band with the name of the Red Stick Ramblers making techno pop music?
Your name needs to at least somewhat fit your genre. Beyond that, it just needs to be a little unique so people will remember it. Death Cab for Cutie sounds like a stupid name, but it sure is memorable and actually fits the type of band it is.

I could see that being death metal...album cover would be some sort of Dragon slaying people at a disco with blood everywhere. Wait a minute...

I didn't get into Archers of Loaf until way late because their name was so dumb. Now, they are one of my favorite bands. So yeah, a name can be a barrier.
I always liked the DC Dischord ethos that as soon as you change one member, you are a new band and need to change your name. Which gets confusing, but prevents things like the Floyd wars.

They've recently changed their name to Grog and The Assassins.
Like I said they play mostly blues/rock type music such as ZZ Top,SRV,Buddy Guy, etc...
But also Van Halen,Pink Floyd
Grog is an inside joke that just doesn't relay well IMO
