How awesome is Jeff Beck?

This 72 year old (and still growing) guitarist can play all styles flawlessly and continues to push himself despite all the acclaim and success he has achieved. He is arguably the most innovative and original of the British guitarists to emerge in the sixties and his playing has never deteriorated, unlike his contemporaries (and friends) Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend and Keith Richards due to extraneous personal problems (drugs, tinnitus, etc). It's almost as if he is a guitar, with a mind that knows how it should ideally be played. Oh, and he builds a mean Hot Rod too.

You're correct, if that means he hasn't allowed his playing skills to diminish due to smack addiction and ridiculously out of tune guitars.

His version of "Over the Rainbow' gives me chills every time I hear it. Amazing stuff.
BTW.....Page would be lost trying to play something with that type of feel. Lost.

Don't get me wrong, from 1968-80 Pagey was arguably the best guitarist on the planet adequately filling the void left by Hendrix's passing. Just what Beck has done with so many genres and how he's still growing as a guitarist impresses the hell out of me.

I was lucky to get to see Jeff Beck when he toured with Stevie Ray Vaughn. It was after Guitar Shop and he had Terry Bozzio on drums. They alternated and the night I saw them Beck closed. At the end SRV came out and jammed on the encore which was maybe one of the best jams I have ever seen live.

Heard so much about SRV, was all the acclaim he received during his short time with us that justified? Seems like he was just an excellent bluesman in the era of the lethal shredders in metal.

Yeah he was all that......I grew up in Birmingham and it seemed like he came through town 2-3 times a year. Now he is some kind of icon but then he was just this weird blues guitarist from Texas who could play like Hendrix.....but he had a huge local following in Birmingham and drew big crowds which is why seemed to always be playing there.
When he was on, he was incredible. However he was also fricked up a lot of the time and not very impressive. I saw him at his low at a New Years Eve Show at the Fox in Atlanta and it was total shite.....he was beyond wasted with his roadies helping him on and off stage. By the time I saw him with Jeff Beck he was back on his game. It was shortly after that tour he got killed. It was too bad because he was he was playing better than ever.
SRV live was a mixed bag live but there is no denying his genius. It's shame because once he sobered up there is no telling what could have been.

Jeff Beck is a great one, part of the original Yardbirds trilogy along with Clapton & Page.
