Meh - I take a good Taylor or vintage Guild all day and twice on Sundays. But, a lot of this is subjective.

then you don't know what you're talking about. i'm sorry Ace.

go ask a luthier about the build quality of a martin vs. taylor. taylor make good guitars, but they aren't on martin's level on craftsmanship or design, objectively.

that's the first time i've heard of rickenbackers being "limited"

they have 48 types of models between basses and guitars.

Nobody is disputing the number of models they make or that they make nice guitars. The guitars are not that versatile, though. Versatility goes to PRS and Strats. I know you're a Rick fanboy/owner, but the style of music you play has a lot to do with that. Not many in the hard rock, prog, or metal arenas play them, though.

For quality Gibson clones at a solid bang-for-the-buck price, a line I find impressive is Edwards. They are a subsidiary of ESP (Japan) and are not found in retail stores in the U.S. due to patent infringements (open-book lawsuit heads, primarily). But they are prevalent on eBay and they show up on national CL searches. Shipping from Japan is typically safe but not cheap, you will pay well over $100, so look for a guitar that's already in the U.S. to eliminate the overseas shipping expense, time lapse and inevitable hassles should a mishap occur and an insurance claim need be filed.

A similar MIJ Gibby clone line that makes nice guitars for the money is Burny. Same advice: Shop eBay and CL and look for one already in the U.S.

A diligent and patient shopper should be able to land a used Edwards or Burny LP Standard copy for about what they'd pay for a new Epiphone LP, and they'd have a much better guitar, especially in the case of an Edwards IMHO. Much better wood selection, electronics and hardware components and overall craftsmanship.

So, you own a Martin, too....

Dude, Taylor makes some damn fine guitars. Both brands also put out some junk, as well. I've heard a couple of cheap Martins that would make you yearn for an entry level Yamaha acoustic. Not sure why this has to be a pissing match.

I own several strats, les pauls and ibanez'....... I too don't care for PRS guitars ....until I bought a cheap prs SE for a few hundred bucks. I still play the other guitars but the SE ( with soapbar pickups) is probably the most versatile one I own. Korea makes some really good guitars for cheap prices. Get the prs Se and play that sucker!!

I have a Burny Les Paul and it is by far the best dual humbucker style guitar I've ever owned. I've had three Gibson Les Pauls; one deluxe and two standards. None of them were in the ballpark of this one. I've played maybe one or two (older) Gibson Les Pauls that I would say are the equal of the Burny but none better IMO.

I got it online from a Jap dealer; it must have been sitting around in a warehouse somewhere for a few years because it was a model from four years prior and it was in the factory packaging and had all the plastic cling covering still on it.

I can't recommend them enough. Sounds and plays amazing; super-solid build quality; far better than anything Gibson is putting out there these days and about one third the price (or less), even with shipping included.

I had heard good things about Edwards and shopped those at the time. They consistently ran a bit more expensive than the Burnys. I honestly can't imagine them being substantially better. But then again I've never played one.

Yet another Martin sucker.

They're excellent guitars. They are simply not worth the premium. This is like Rolls Royce owners trying to justify why they paid a 200% or 300% premium.

Hey, whatever floats your boat, baw. It's your money. I play Ovation (and I have 35 year old Guild), so I really am a rube, right?

But, if I were going to buy a higher end acoustic tomorrow, I would buy a Taylor Grand Symphony. Martin is not even on my radar.

It's a genre that does very little for me, and I really think you're overstating their level of respect to make a point.

That said, I shall blow your mind:

I actually know him. Just a little friendly banter. I think Martin makes some fantastic guitars. So does Taylor. So does Rickenbacker. So does PRS. Hell, the much derided Ibanez makes some really nice guitars.

I agree with all of that. I do agree that PRS kind of give off a soulless vibe - but, our ears are trained, primarily, off this Fender/Gibson fault line, and further, the single coil/humbucker divide. Couple that with the prevalence of a handful of amp makers and PRS sounds "alien".

For example - a combination of PRS and Mesa sounds overproduced to me. I like it in some things, though. Rickenbacker has something going for it for sure - a unique, signature sound that is nearly perfect for some pieces of music.

For me, subjectively, I like Taylors and Guilds because of the feel to the hands. For whatever reason, Martins don't "feel" right to me. I have played a Martin in a guitar store 1 time that I thought I could grow to love. But, I feel that way about most Taylors, so I admit it is a subjective thing.

(And, I never cared much for most Yamaha acoustics, although there was a 12-string I almost bought one time.)
