very cool to see them together. i just don't put them in the same category really. isbell is insanely versatile and a true music prodigy (now just genius I guess--still young though). Sturgill Simpson is very talented but mostly a Merle Haggard throwback--a bit gimmicky for in-depth listening. but i do like him.

Thanks for sharing. I was there last night. It was really great seeing them both on the same night. Fantastic show from both guys.

Sturgill is a pretty incredible song writer.

Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson are both incredible musicians, but I'm not sure how you compare them. To me, they are really nothing alike.

Isbell is an elite songwriter and it's almost haunting to me at times how good he is. I think it's because I can relate to a lot of his music, especially Southeastern.

Sturgill on the other hand is the epitome of what country music should be. A guy that can save the genre from the Florida Georgia Line's of the world.

We are fortunate to have them both putting out incredible music, but I don't think it's worth comparing.

That's a good take. Isbell, and specifically Southeastern, strikes a deep chord with me. Simpson strikes a deep chord with a past me and just fascinates me in general, but a lot of that is an intellectual exercise and the idea that this cowboy is dabbling in ayuahasca and such. But my connection to Isbell is more genuine and current. From "Cover Me Up" to "Flying over Water" to "Flagship" over the new album... Isbell really speaks to Middle-aged me and my relationship with my wife and my standing as a father of two boys.

That being said, Simpson's vocals kill Isbell. Sturgill can flat out sing. And while I love hearing Isbell sing his songs that he wrote, this song (which I love and shared with an email group that I'm a part of) really highlights that Simpson is a much more powerful vocalist. Guy can flat out sing.

I think this is what I was getting at. I love them both and gimmicky is probably too pejorative for SS. I just think JI lyrics and overall songwriting and voice make for a more well-rounded musician. SS is old school country done better than most old-school country singers (and I love many of them). Just a matter of taste and as Lawyers Guns money said, different beasts.
