Who do you think is the first southern rock band?
I heard bands from the Allman Brothers, Flying Burrito Brothers to Buck Owens and his Buckaroos that were the first.

I've seen BO credited as the first country-rock act
I think w/ABB the emphasis is on blues more than country. Their major influences were not country harmony acts like the Louvins, but the blues & R&B acts that also influenced the Stones/Animals/Them/Yardbirds, & the hard rock acts that followed
So I say ABB

Buck Owens helped create the Bakersfield sound that was country music influenced by 50s rock music. I would assume his music was more country rock that helped pave the way for future bands that evolved into southern rock.
Merle Haggard was a member of the band which seemed to influenced Ronnie Van Zant and Gram Parsons.

Thought Merle was always a solo act.

He was in Bonnie Owens' pants for a while, but I don't think he was ever in Buck Owens' band. She continued touring with him long after they divorced. In fact, he had her come out and do a couple numbers the two times I saw him.

Was Merle Haggard in the Buckaroos?
Various sidemen throughout the years included JayDee Maness, Wayne "Moose" Stone, Jay McDonald, Ken Presley, and very early on, Merle Haggard. Haggard, who worked a short time with Owens in 1962, suggested the group's name.

Pot Liquor began playing in ‘69.

The Band. Listen to Levon.
Rockabilly is a predecessor. So, in another show of bias, I suggest Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks.

Flying Burrito Brothers - Los Angeles, CA
Buck Owens and the Buckaroos - Bakersfield, CA
CCR - El Cerrito, CA
I guess they could still be considered "southern" rock since they relied heavily on a musical style that began in the South, but I would go with Allman Brothers Band. First album is 1969 so same time as Flying Burrito Brothers and CCR but not Buck Owens who really broke in 1963.

I object to the ABB being categorized as a “southern rock” band. I think bands like Lynard Skynyrd and Marshall Tucker Band fit the bill more appropriately.
Allmans were more bluesy, jazzy and sophisticated, imo.

Appearance of the term southern rock coincides with the popularity of ABB. That later acts lacked their complexity in no way excludes ABB.

"The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB) is an American country rock band formed in 1966."
