Great song, but the chronology of the last verse is completely off.A WWII vet would not have had a grandson fighting in Vietnam.

That scenario is very possible. The average age of soldiers during WWII was 26, therefore there were soldiers in that war old enough to have a grandson in Vietnam.
It’s simple math. A man born in 1910 would have been 31 when the US entered the war in 1941. He could have had a child by the age of at least 10 years old by then. That child could have bore a son in 1950 who, therefore would’ve been 19 in 1969.
It did happen in the McCain family:
John S. McCain Sr. was a U.S. Navy admiral in World War II.
He was the U.S. Senator John S. McCain III, who is a Vietnam veteran.
