So, I have no idea who Bob Dylan is but I have seen this fellow been posted on the Music Board. Also, I guess this puts an end to the "rap is for dummmies" ideology that is often present on this board.

What are you doing on a message board? You should be doing stand up and writing for TV shows.

I'm assuming for this study "words" include made-up hip hop slang.

Word diversity employed primarily for the purposes of rhyming does not equate to high quality diction and storytelling.

Anyone who thinks that any of the four artists listed above Dylan (Eminem, Jay Z, Tupac, and Kanye) are superior storytellers, greater lyricists, or more astute songwriters, needs to carry their arse to the liquor store and kill off the few remaining brain cells that they have left.

Each of the four artists is talented in their own right and I would contend that they are some of the best poets of the past 50 years, but, again, to even intimate that they are better lyrical craftsmen than the most renowned musician of the 20th century is ridiculous.

I can use a thesaurus too, that doesn't make me a better writer than Shakespeare.

Really only Tupac rises to the level of "artist" in that group, although Marshall flirts with it at times. Technically, he is a very adroit "rhymer" - and to freestyle one has to develop a good vocabulary for rhyming's sake.

Jay-Z made a career out of saying, "Yeah" on collaboration records. Watch Kanye speak on any subject - he's an idiot and a narcissistic one, at that.

Dre's pretty smart, as are Ice-T and the Simmons brothers - but that's getting pretty old school, though. None of the young guys is very impressive (not that I pay all that much attention anymore).

I don't see Eminem and Kanye being able to fit the words "leopard skin pillbox hat" into a song.

Any and all mainstream music, regardless of genre, is typically popular among the predominantly simple-minded who value simple, accessible hooks and melodies, catchy choruses, and visual aesthetics, more than instrumental innovation, virtuosity, challenging lyrics, and originality. There have been a few exceptions to this rule (e.g. Pink Floyd), but mainstream America often likes something that is easy to listen to and doesn't require a great investment of time or thought on the part of the listener to enjoy it.

Hip-hop has had a number of highly intelligent lyricists who presumably lack the formal education to employ such a diverse lexicon.

However, the general perception of hip-hop's lyrical merit is often hindered by the gratuitous references to gangsta lifestyle, materialism, and misogyny. The same is often true with metal artists who routinely reference occultism, violence, sex, and drugs in their songs.

Yes, many of the mainstream, commercial successes are writing for the lowest common denominator of listeners, but there are those that dare to challenge the system and discuss matters pertaining to socioeconomic status, classicism, social injustice, oppression, contemporary philosophy, etc.

Again though, how many different words you utilize in your writing will not simply result in lyrical genius.

Their music is a beat and them bitching for 10 paragraphs or putting themselves over for 11.

They're going to use a lot of words.

Miss Macy sniffed. "Why is everyone worrying so? They're not doing anything to us, are they?"

In the cities, elsewhere, there was blind panic. But not in Miss Macy's garden. She looked up calmly at the monstrous mile-high figures of the invaders.

A week ago, they'd landed, in a spaceship a hundred miles long that had settled down gently in the Arizona desert. Almost a thousand of them had come out of that spaceship and were now walking around.

But, as Miss Macy pointed out, they hadn't hurt anything or anybody. They weren't quite substantial enough to affect people. When one stepped on you or stepped on a house you were in, there was sudden darkness and until he moved his foot and walked on, you couldn't see; that was all.

They had paid no attention to human beings and all attempts to communicate with them had failed, as had all attacks on them by the army and the air force. Shells fired at them exploded right inside them and didn't hurt them,. Not even the H-bomb dropped on one of them while he was crossing a desert area had bothered him in the slightest.

They had paid no attention to us at all.

"And that," said Miss Macy to her sister who was also Miss Macy since neither of them was married, "is proof that they don't mean us any harm, isn't it?"

"I hope so, Amanda," said Miss Macy's sister. "But look what they're doing now."

It was a clear day, or it had been one. The sky had been bright blue and the almost humaniod heads and shoulders of the giants, a mile up there, had been quite clearly visible. But now it was getting misty, Miss Macy saw as she followed her sister's gaze upward. Each of the two big figures in sight has a tank-like object in his hands and from these objects clouds of vaporous matter was merging, settling slowly toward Earth.

Miss Macy sniffed again. "Making clouds. Maybe that's how they have fun. Clouds can't hurt us. Why do people worry so?"

She went back to her work.

What life one must have to take time out of their day, to actually have multiple log ins to a MB. Just to randomly put thought into posting something to get a rise out of people, that they'll probably never meet. Internet trolls need a documentary.... because a troll is the only answer to this OP'S opinion and thought process.
