Wow. Great, great performances. I'm usually pretty down on hip hop when performed live, but this is awesome.
I'm sure some people think he's corny and soft or whatever, but I can't help but be moved by his positivity and just general JOY when he's performing.
New Song "Somewhere in Paradise"
Stripped down "Sunday Candy"

Really?
I thought he sounded like shite and I have no frame of reference having never heard him before....But the mix was terrible and he sounded pretty bad

1) SNL mixes always suck. They're notorious for it.
2) There's more to a performance than the voice/sound.

They don't always suck, I can name several off the top of my head that sounded great.

What does that even mean?? Like you enjoyed the way he danced? Look my wife doesn't listen to rap at all and after about 45 seconds she said "this dudes flow sucks" and then we went on to discuss how bad he actually sounded

My thoughts exactly. I couldn't detect any redeeming qualities in the performance.
Ditto the guy from last week - Leon something or other?

I've never noticed this before. In fact, some of my favorite live performances of bands I like are on SNL. Just a few weeks ago, they re-ran a show from 2008 where TI was the guest - and it was fricking awesome. He had basically a metal band backing him and I listened to it like 25 times. I don't understand why more rap can't use good instruments like that live.

What else? The singing was bad. The lyrics were stupid. I mean, the instruments were OK, but who cares in this instance?

Lyrics were stupid? Okay...

I don't care about lyrics, but they were nothing remarkable.
What did you enjoy so much about the performance? I thought he sounded off (just like Leon did last week).

Maybe it's just because Sunday Candy is pretty much my jam of the year. I enjoy that Chance actually looks like he's enjoying himself on stage. That he's not trying to act hard. That he's positive and upbeat instead of all the negative crap we usually see in hip hop. I liked the really restrained take on Sunday Candy and the emotions about his grandmother really resonate with me and make me think of my own relationship with my grandmother.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I just don't care for his music. I was all set up to like it before it aired because I had heard a lot of buzz, but I really thought it was pretty shitty. I guess I just don't like whatever kind of music we say this is.

I'll add that posters on Stereogum were equally smitten by the performance, not that that means anything. I'm just kind of surprised at the negativity after seeing absolutely glowing reactions in the indie music blogosphere.

It absolutely sucked.
It sounded terrible. His dancing was weird. I can't think of one thing that was actually decent.

Just went and watched his 2nd song.
Muchhhhh better than than his opening song. Perhaps he wasn't comfortable with the first one due to it being a new song, but it was really rough.
Sunday song was pretty legit.

It's also probably because I've been a Chance fan since the 10 Day mixtape dropped (named after the time he produced it in when he got kicked out of high school for weed possession for 10 days). Acid Rap was a freaking masterpiece that doesn't get nearly enough critical acclaim.
I also love that it's coming out of Chicago at the same time, basically, as Drill which is inspired by the darkenss of Chiraq, and this is the yang to that yin. A bright beacone of hope and positivity that shows another side of what's happening in Chicago with a great spoken word scene (watch Louder than a Bomb on Netflix sometime about the high school poetry slam scene).
Some great tracks off Acid Rap:
Juice
Favorite Song
Smoke Again
