Being from Louisiana, I know more about New Orleans music than most but not nearly as much as most of you. I mentioned to a (Texan) co-worker recently that I was attempting to listen to more New Orleans music and they assumed that meant Jazz. There are obviously a lot of very different types of music (both current and historic) from New Orleans.

Can anyone categorize the different types, sort of as if there were different Sirius/XM channels for each (i.e. not sure if Jazz would be one channel or various depending on era)?

Lot of rap and metal from New Orleans too. Both have a fairly distinctive sound.

New Orleans rap has lost the New Orleans sound. You put it on and it sounds like it could be from anywhere

In your categories, where would the following be considered?

Professor Longhair
Harry Connick Jr.
The Meters (Funk or is that more of current artists such as Galactic?)
Trombone Shorty

Glad someone mentioned New Orleans Piano. Integral part of the scene. Check out this video from Jon Cleary on the History of New Orleans Piano.

I was listening to Cleary all day on Tuesday. I love his music. I want to say that I saw that clip on tv years back. Good stuff.

Don't forget the Sludge scene. Sludge metal was pretty much perfected in New Orleans.

While you may hear it while walking down Bourbon Street, it's not New Orleans Music anyway.

Swamp pop isn't from New Orleans, it's from Ascension Parish.
