I was looking at buying an all-tube head. I like to play hard rock. I like my clean channel to be clean channel.

I was looking at these Carvin amps because it looks like you really get a lot of bang for your buck. Has anyone played these amps? If so, how is the tone? Carvin V3. It looks like it has great tubes and all the features of the current amps in the $1100-2200 price ranges. Lots of great reviews on the site...but that doesn't mean much.

A Marshall JVM205H is the other amp I was considering which is quite a bit more expensive and a 50W amp which is probably plenty for me. I really don't need many channels because I'll probably just use it for recording one track at a time.

Anyone have any other great amps that they are playing on for hard rock?

Current gear: ADA MP-2 (I know...I know...but it's awesome with some really great tones), Rocktron power amp (I want tube power) and Peavy Valveking 412 cab.

So don't buy a Carvin is what you're saying...despite this looking like a hot arse amp and at a price that would allow me to buy a cabinet.

I guess I should just buy the JVM. The good thing is I see used ones going for quite a bit of money. At least you can get something back out of it if you decide to get something else.

And you left Line 6 off of your list.

Boogie is great but pricey and not a real road sturdy rig. Fender twin is a solid traditional sound.

My amp of choice is a THD univalve with a 6v6 power tube. Play it thru a closed back avatar 2-12 with a Celestion greenback and a Celestion blue. Love the sound of this rig. I have a marshal TSL 602 that I probably haven't switched on in 2 years. Main guitar is a 2007 les paul custom antique ebony which I also like the sound of. Experiment as much as is practical with different amps in your price range, your bound to fall in love with one of them just like I did. Good luck!

I saw your link. Several in the post were defending Carvins. I'm someone who is going to record at home and occasionally rock out in my underwear. Not going to be playing nightly in da clubs...unless I quit my day job.

I've always wanted to get a Marshall. I think they are overpriced and it's more about principle. After looking on ebay at how much people want for used ones, then it does make the purchase easier.

Has anyone every bought a factory restock or return? Any nightmares?

I've seen some youtube vids of that and it's a great sounding amp.

So I'm a little nervous. I just made my first ebay purchase for a Mesa Boogie Mark V head. I'll probably get a 4x12 cab later. I'll use my Valveking 412 cab for now.

Great deal at $1600.00 for gently used 15-20 hrs in a home studio 5 months old. All original packaging. It was a new listing...so hopefully I was just really lucky. I figure if I don't like it, then I can just put it back on ebay and probably get more money out of it.

I don't think so either. It's my first amp purchase since 1995. I finally pulled the trigger. I'm finally letting go of my rack mount guitar rig.

Once you go tube, I find it's impossible to go back to solid state. I have an SVT, and hate the weight of it, but the tone is the best of the best.

I played a Carvin and enjoyed it. Not my favorite but not terrible either.

Favorite amp I've ever played/owned:

Marshall Silver Jubilee

Thing is nasty.

Well, in my defense...my power amp is solid state (Rocktron). My ADA MP-2 Digital preamp has 12AX7A tubes. I does have some pretty great tones. I have an Alesis Quadraverb 2 for effects (which is pretty ok).

I thought about just getting a rack mount tube power amp like a Carvin, Boogie, or Marshall...but I think the Mark V will serve me for the next twenty years.

Check Craigslist, pawn shops, etc.

A friend of mine bought a 100w tube Fender amp at a pawnshop for 250 bucks. The guy said it didn't work. My bud plugged in the head and voila, it worked.

He called Fender, it was made in May, 1969.

It will rock your world.

No way to simulate getting the power section cooking. Good pickup though, will be loud as hell to get the best rock tones. Mesa eq sections are a little tricky so you'll have to do a lot of tweaking...
