Townes van zandt

There is a new radio station, surprisingly country, around here that has been playing the piss out of him. But, they sometimes follow him up with some crap like Toby Keith.

So who else should I add to my Itunes list?

Chris Stapleton
Jamey Johnson
Sturgill Simpson
Whitey Morgan
Cody Jinks
Aaron Watson

That's a good list. I have all of them on my ipod rotation as well. Check out Shovels & Rope and the new collaboration album "Southern Family"...you'll pick a few from there as well. Chris Stapleton and his wife Morgane dish out the best rendition of "You Are My Sunshine" that I ever heard...it blew me away. I also added a bunch of tunes by artists that my mom and dad grew up on

Dwight Yoakam
Bellamy Bros
Vern Gosdin
Hank Jr, of course
Billy Joe Shaver
KY Head Hunters
Patty Loveless
Foster & Lloyd
etc....

The most talented singer/songwriter (female) is Rachel Farley. I think she is struggling to break through because her Nashville handlers want her to perform the cliche BS popular now but she is trying to stick to her guns. When and if she caves, she will be a huge star. I hope she sticks to her true country style and break the modern mold but I think she will have to cave to become a star.

But I felt the need to post in it anyway!

Thanks for all the suggestions but I know older country singers I am just looking for newer singers that are making new music that I might not of heard of yet.

Probably more Americana, but I love Aaron Lewis.

Country radio's been pretty irrelevant for a while now. What was it that guy from Sony Nashville said, “If you’re not on country radio, you don’t exist”? This being right before Aaron Watson hit #1 with The Underdog?

Not sure if it'll actually collapse on itself quite yet, but it's nice to dream.

Oh right, suggestions:
Dwight Yoakam (been mentioned already, his recent material is phenomenal and worth checking out)
First Aid Kit
Hellbound Glory
Jason Boland
Karen Jonas
Justin Townes Earle
Tami Neilson
The Defibulators
Doug Seegers
Hank Williams III

I used to be a texas country music writer. Interviewed pretty much everyone you can possibly think of.

If Texas country/red dirt is what you like here are a couple of suggestions:

William Clark Green - He's going to be huge here within the next year
Turnpike Troubadours
American Aquarium
Red Shahan
Tyler Childers and the High Wall
Koe Wetzel and the Konvicts
Chris Knight
Parker McCollum
John Baumann
Flatland Cavalry

ETA: I see a good few of you have decent taste in some good music (texas country/red dirt). Any of you baws coming down for Larry Joe Taylor Festival in a couple weeks?

Not sure that either of these count as country per se but I'd add Cross Canadian Ragweed and The Steeldrivers. And everyone should have a little Robert Earl Keen in their lineup.
