I love Ry on slide.

Think It's Going to Work Out Fine

Lowell George is a very good slide player too and I'm a huge Little Feat fan, but he's still not Ry Cooder. This is the original version of Willin. Lowell George had injured his hand so he had Ry Cooder playing slide on this. There are much flashier and polished versions of Willin but this is my favorite.

Any Drive-By Truckers album with John Neff on it. One of the best slide players IMO.

Even Less - Porcupine Tree

One of Steven's best lyrical songs, too.

quote:

A body is washed up on a Norfolk beach
He was a friend that I could not reach
He thought I was cold but I understand
But for the grace of God goes another man

And I may just waste away from doing nothing
But I'm a martyr to even less

A choir boy is buried on the moors
Where we used to go dreaming when we were bored
Some kids are best left to fend for themselves
And others were born to stack shelves

And I may just waste away from doing nothing
But I'm a martyr to even less

frick you and your book too
You can have it back
When I'm gone these songs will
Will be my tracks

And I had a stupid dream that I could change things
But I'm a martyr to even less

I hate the ground that I have walked upon
Nothing I've done has ever mattered long

The late output that Steven attached the PT name to kind of bored the shite out of me and I haven't listened to them nearly as much lately. I was an absolute fanboy for about 10 years, though. That said, this performance reminds me how special they were. Gavin's fills are so fricking perfect.

Are you serious? I'm jealous. I've never gotten to see it live. Was it Lindley or some other guy?

Elmore James - Dust My Broom

the king of the slide guitar

edit to add:

quote:

"I practiced twelve hours a day, every day, until my fingers were bleeding, trying to get the same sound as Elmore James. This went on for weeks and weeks, and finally someone told me, 'He plays with a slide.'" - Robbie Robertson, at the 1992 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony honoring Elmore James
