Everyone has them, what our yours? What are the things in pieces of music that really bug you?

For me it's:
Synthesizers
Drum Machines
Auto-tune
"screamo" lyrics

The clap effect which was so popular with '70s commercial and arena rock (e.g. Boston).

singing that sounds like screeching/screaming.

rappers rapping about cars they don't have and things they haven't done. to me, rap loses any appeal if it isn't tru.

Bands in the 70's used to come out and say, "we gonna play all night long", and 90 minutes later they were gone.

I don't like when people who don't normally sing falsetto do it for entire songs. Sounds pussified.

There is a trend lately I'm noticing that there is a lot of music out there where the vocal melody is basically wordlessly mimicking a keyboard line or something. They say something like "Whoa whoa whoa" or "Hey hey hey" or whatever, anything to avoid having to attach a coherent thought to the melody. You can tell all they're doing is picking out a keyboard line and then just singing it over the backing music instead of playing it.

It's really lazy and makes for mind-numbingly bland music.

Synthesizers

This is a really odd one. Is there some specific style of synthesizer you hate? Very few acts are bringing out actual baby grands and hammond organs.

The stupid robot voices turned Daft Punk's Random Access Memories from a really solid album into an unenjoyable letdown.

The country drawl in modern country singers. I know it's popular, but it irks me to no end.

Think the 80's. Basically, any tones that don't sound like a real piano, electric piano, or organ, especially when it's simulating horns. It just makes songs sound corny, dated, and lame.

Acoustic instruments are timeless. I'm a horn guy, so I will always prefer an actual horn section or an organ over synth.

The only real "effects" I like is a little overdrive on the guitar and maybe some wah. Too many effects and artificial sounds takes away from the musicianship of the artists and can cause songs to rapidly sound dated. That's why Cameo's "Neck" sounds old and out of date but Chicago's "Make Me Smile" doesn't despite being much older.

One of my newest pet peeves is the way songwriting works these days. It's basically 4 or 5 guys that write every single annoying Top 10 pop hit of the last 20 years.

And just changing one word in the song gets you a co-writing credit. Look at the madness with McCartney and Kanye West:

quote:

Kanye West Paul McCartney Kirby Lauryen Mike Dean Ty Dolla Sign Dave Longstreth Dallas Austin Elon Rutberg Noah Goldstein

Is this really necessary? I'm seriously asking.

When watching a concert video and the lead guitarist is about to shred an unbelievable solo and the camera pans to the drummer or bass player.

All these Modern Rock bands that let their singer beat on a stupid drum.

Then you wouldn't have the brilliance that is Pink Floyd

Not a big Pink Floyd fan, personally. I don't hate them, I'm just not as big a fan as many. I like "Wish You Were Here" and "Dark Side of the Moon" a lot, though. However, the vast majority of their catalog is just not my cup of tea though I can acknowledge and respect their composition skills, musical innovation, and technical wizardry.

When bands become over-produced. Classic example is what Coldplay used to be and what they are now. Parachutes was such a great record with a great sound. Couple albums later, they started over-saturating their stuff with electronic sounds and strings. Let the music breathe a little...

-When a band records a song in a key that they have no shot at replicating live

-When a lead singer overdubs a lot of really good sounding bgv's on the record, and they are nowhere to be found in the live performance

-When a "live" record sounds just as over produced as a studio record
