There are just some bands that are good no matter what. That said music is pretty much all opinion. As a hip hop fan I catch a lot of shite but I won't go and trash your music. For example I hate country music but I'm not going to rip it for the simple fact that I don't like it.

When talking about music, I use favorite and best interchangeably. Why would something be my favorite if it isn’t the best to me? If I didn’t think Titus Andronicus was the best current rock band then they wouldn’t be my favorite. It isn't like I am championing them because we went to the same high school or something. It is strictly based on how much I enjoy their music. Now I am not arrogant enough to think my opinion objectively proves that one band is better than another. But there is no real way to objectively prove one band is better than another, so there is truly no such thing as “best” current rock band. So you just as well list your favorite, no?
I agree. When it comes to music, how can something be considering the best to you if it isn't your favorite? I just don't get it.

Precisely. I don't like Queen. Sorry. But I wouldn't ever trash the band and say they suck. They are very good at something I just don't much care for. I can respect a band and admit they are quality even if I, personally, don't like them.
Though KISS sucks subjectively and objectively.

Sports and music are totally different though. People don't always root for the best teams/players (e.g. Ole Miss fans). They have a wide variety of reasons to root for certain teams. In music, why would your favorite be anything other than what you think is the best or what you enjoy the most?
Plus in sports there are objective measures than can pretty much prove who the better player/team is. That isn't the case for music.

You can have a favorite band, mine is Zeppelin, and still say the Beatles are the better band. I don't understand why you can't fully enjoy a band/artist and still concede that there are other bands/artists that are better?

I agree. The Saints are my favorite team because I'm from LA and grew up watching them. I realize they aren't better than the Texans or the other good teams in the NFL right now.
One of my favorite bands right now is The Avett Brothers. They are one of my favorites because I think they sounds better than most other bands right now, therefore they are better to me.

But what are you basing that determination on?
Michael Jordan's greatness exists regardless of whether or not he is my favorite. In other words, my liking or disliking of Michael Jordan is not an appropriate metric by which to judge his basketball prowess. Metrics such as points, assists, MVPs, and the like are much more probative than BR21's rooting interest.
Music on the other hand has no other purpose in this world but for me to enjoy it. Does it also exist for you to enjoy it? Well, sure. But I don't give a shite if you like a song or not. Your opinion of the song has no bearing on whether I like the song when I listen to it. Record sales have no bearing on whether I like a song when I listen to it. General reputation has no bearing on whether I like a song when I listen to it.
The ONLY thing that matters is whether I like it. There is no other consideration. And so there can be no other metric. Music is 100% subjective. Doing the math, that makes it 0% objective.
Passion Pit is a way way way better band than the Beatles. Not even a close call. Why? Well because I've listened to both bands and I like Passion Pit's songs a lot better than the Beatles' songs. End of analysis.
There is no best.
There is only favorite.
But to the extent there is best, it is only a survey of favorite, and is therefore of little concern to me.
Guy: The song Sleepyhead sucks.
Me: You're wrong dude. It's the best song put out in the last five years.
Guy: What makes you say that with such certainty? You think you're some kind of music expert or something?
Me: No, it just sounds the best. What else do you want to know?
Guy: Well I want to know if these rumors about you having sex with my mother are true
Me: Oh yeah. Twice last week. Probably again tomorrow night. In your bed.
Guy: Okay. Cool. Talk to you later.

Nonsense. If I hate every note, they are terrible.
Analysis over.

Ok my bad Nickleback is as good as The Who. Does that make sense? That is why we have music critics and why we critique music. It gives people points to discuss. I'm not saying what you like isn't any good or is the best thing ever. The point is there are better bands/artists than others just like everything else in life. And come on you know that not everyone you discuss music with is not a neanderthal.

I disagree with this statement in its entirety. Great music is more than just something you enjoy, it becomes a part of you. It says something about the human condition or expresses emotions or thoughts that words cannot express.
Beethoven wasn't just great because he wrote the best symphonies, he was also shoving in the faces of his rich, effete audiences the realities of the Age of Napoleon. Stravinksy's Rites of Spring is radical even today because it is NOT all that enjoyable. It's harsh and atonal, and friggin' brilliant. I don't even like ballet and I'll listen/watch to Rites of Spring whenver I have the chance. It's a staggering achievement.
If you only view pop music as a commodity, then yes, the consumer's enjoyment is the only metric. But I don't view music as a commodity.

I find it hard to believe you can "hate every note" of anything. Play a note in isolation and, well, it's just a note. It's what you do with that note.
But this analysis essentially means that you are the ultimate arbiter of the quality of anything. Which I guess is fine from a personal standpoint, but why bother discussing music on a forum? This viewpoint is completely antithetical to having an analytical discussion on music. "I like it. Discussion over." There's nowhere to go.
