I'd put Rush at the top just for the amount of sound they were able to crank out using only three guys.

I consider THE WHO a 3-piece since Daltrey doesn't do anything but sing.

What they were able to accomplish with just one guitar, bass and drums was pretty impressive.

Van Halen w/ DLR would be under consideration with this criteria. Maybe Zeppelin too.

Half of the rock bands ever created fit that criteria. That's a discussion for the 4-piece rock bands thread.

I think his point is that they only had 3 instrumentalists (i.e., 3 pieces) + a vocalist.

As the OP, I was referring to only 3 band members and imagining the vocalist played an instrument.
