Bands whose sound was heavily defined by their lead singer's vocals.

You could probably say that pretty much any band would fall in this category. But it seems like there are some vocalists who really stand out in this regard.
For me, the ultimate would be Donald Fagen and Steely Dan. I'm just glad that he got past his reluctance to front the group by their 2nd album. "Dirty Work" is a fine song, but it sounds nothing like a Steely Dan song. Can't imagine anyone else that they could have had on lead vocals that would have completed their sound as well as Donald Fagen did.
David Palmer sounded like he belonged in an entirely different band. The same goes for Jim Hodder.

I'd probably add Ian Curtis from Joy Division. Take him away from the band and you suddenly sound like New Order.

Led Zepplin and Nirvana come to mind. Its just impossible to replicate their voices

Good call on GNR and 10,000 Maniacs.
I'd probably add Boston. Can't think of anyone that could replace Brad Delp without drastically changing the sound of the band.

yes Delp was definetly the main cog in the band for sure .
Id also add Maynard from Tool . Hard to imagine Tool without him being the lead singer

Journey. Steve Perry was The Voice for a reason.
Yes, they existed before and after him, but a casual listener probably doesn't even know that, and wouldn't know they were listening to Journey without that voice.
The band seemed to confirm this as they hired a Steve Perry impersonator as a replacement.
