I've done enough listens to make a judgement. It's pretty average stuff. I think I like it better than Centipede but only because i fricking hate that album.

Have they as a group lost it? I mean Panda Bear solo still puts out good stuff. Avery Tare's shite is solid. Is the magic gone?

Disappointing. The two "singles" from it are probably the best songs on it, and they would still be throw-aways on something like MPP.

yeah, I think they have lost it. I think they are too focused on their side projects.

The album is OK imho, but nothing special. Certainly not as good as panda bears last album.

MPP is such a high watermark to try to match.

Boys Latin is better than anything AC has done since MPP.

I dunno I was pretty excited when I first heard Floridada. Turns out thats about the best thing it has going for it. Oh well.

It's still a little early for me to say how I would rate the new album. I think it is at least as good as PBvGR though. But I also think Hz is a damn good album. It just had the misfortunate of having to follow the Feels/SJ/MPP stretch. One of my favorite three album stretches ever. Sung Tongs is pretty awesome too if you want to extend it to four albums.

Mr. Noah is light years better than any song on the new AC record.

It's all personal opinion, but I probably prefer FloriDada.

I already have a thread on this, but I disagree completely.

It's easily my third favorite album of theirs. The two singles are awesome, but the rest of the album is great. I like how Avey Tare and Panda Bear play off each other on this album, more so than any other that I can think of.

Besides the singles, Hocus Pocus and Vertical are very good. Burglars, On Delay, Bagels in Kiev, and the closer are all really fun songs.

I've always preferred AC to Panda Bear. His first album is pretty good, but I find his solo stuff a little too mellow and boring, overall. Just my opinion.

I never thought the magic was gone, but was a little disillusioned with Hz. I had hope for this album, and they delivered. A lot of people hated MPP at first because a lot of the songs were simple and a bit cheesy, but now people consider it their high point. Over time, people will see what an accomplishment Painting With was.

I have given it one listen, and I enjoyed it for the most part. Their albums are definitely albums that you should listen to multiple times before giving up.

Yep, it got better after that.

Not as good now, though, but MPP, SJ, and Feels are just too hard to follow.

This is an old article, but just read it and found it interesting.

Apparently the "dada" in "Floridada" is a reference to Dadaism.

LINK

quote:

Yesterday Animal Collective officially announced their 11th full-length album Painting With. According to the band’s press release, the record is “concerned with art (Cubism, Dadaism and the distorted way those artists viewed the world) and the human experience, and the meeting of both…”

The band also released the album’s first single, appropriately titled, “FloriDada.” Formed as a direct response to oppressive bourgeois nationalism in the early 1900s, the art movement Dadaism rejected the idea that art had to be logical by creating work that often seemed random and meaningless. Similarly, Animal Collective has written a song that defies decoding. The lyrics paint a surreal picture of a mythical world complete with a “Ghanian dancer” and “lads from Osaka,”

Wish I would have been able to catch them this year, but they only played a festival here and I'd rather see them in their own show.
