Probably just going to use the audacity program, since that's the only one I have ever used. Feel free to make recommendations for that too.
thanx in advance.

Audio isn't as system intensive as video, fortunately. I'm using an i5 Lenovo laptop PC @ 1.60GHz with 16gb RAM from 2018 and that's probably even overkill. The only reason it's as souped up as it is is because of the video editing I do.
ETA: I use Mixcraft as my DAW.

What do you think the minimum processor speed would be? For just music recording.
The one I'm using, is having some lag issues after a few tracks, but it's old.

Not sure, but I haven't had any lag or trouble with my specs, so you could shoot for those. That should make for a fairly inexpensive setup.
What are your current specs?

I don't know that it's about proc speed. I've been ... converting media for decades longer than you've been alive. Do you need an FAQ in MakeMkv, MusicBee, etc.?

Any new computer you buy from a reputable brand, like Dell, HP and Lenovo, will be able to run Audacity well. The cheapest new desktop on Dell's website, a $500 Inspiron, is 15 times faster than your current CPU.

Congrats! In January I upgraded my old 2013 iMac with Protools that no longer worked to a Mac Mini M2 Pro with Logic. The Mini is awesome.

That's all great news, since I'm mostly kind of a cheapskate

I don’t know what that is, but it just sounds bad (except for the RAM).
