You should check out the first Nightmare on Elm Street film by Wes Craven. It's a classic and one of the few exceptions of the 80s slasher genre.
I watched enough to pick up on why it was/is so popular and fairly well regarded. I don't particularly dislike Craven's filmmaking style - the genre just isn't my cup of tea. I've probably watched a total of 20 to 25 minutes of the movie and I can say, "Meh?" It certainly seems better than many, many films of the genre.
