It has probably been around 15 yrs since the old Broadmoor Theatre closed down for good. When it went to the second run format, it was pretty successful. Now I know the Broadmoor wasn't exactly Mann's Chinese Theatre, but to see a good movie for a buck was pretty cool. I saw lots of movies multiple times in their second run at the Broadmoor after they completed their first run in the big theatres. It was usually a few weeks after they left their first run that they would go to the Broadmoor. Another benefit was if you weren't sure if you wanted to pay full price for a certain movie you had doubts about, you didn't mind forking over a buck to see it. Long story short, I would love to see another second run theatre pop up again, although it's highly unlikely. Any thoughts?

There was also another one of these on Essen, IIRC.

Too many undesirables would go. Its what ran Citiplace out of business.

And The Grand was a second run theater for a few years.

New Orleans needs one too.

The Joy on Airline closed in the late 1990's and the Joy's Panorama on Veterans closed in late 2000. The last film I saw there was Gladiator.

Depends on the movies that they run. I don't remember it being that way. Mostly old folks and young parents with kids as I remember.

I know it's just wishful thinking on my part, but I do feel that the good far outweighed the bad in all of my experiences. The last movie I saw at the Broadmoor was Daredevil, which I actually enjoyed. I know I'm in the minority there.

I think torrenting, home video and premium movie channels killed second run theaters. The window for movies jumping from the theater to other formats has shrunk so much that there's not much time for stuff to hit a second run theater. I mean, there are movies that were released in February that are already on DVD, like Fifty Shades of Grey. And stuff that came out in the fall that is about to hit HBO, like Gone Girl.

Possibly. I think the non-existent profit margin was a big reason. People that are too cheap to pay full price for tickets are less likely to spend $15 on snacks.

The movie theatre that used to be on the north side of campus and share a parking lot with Murphy's, IHOP, etc showed dollar movies towards the end of it's run. North side of campus + dollar movies = hilarity, especially for scary movies. You couldn't go there and expect to enjoy the movie itself.
