The possibility of Superman returning as a threat instead of a hero has been discussed in numerous threads, based on Snyder's love for pitting heroes against each other and the long history of Darkseid turning Superman against Earth both in the comics and in the animated series.

Since the trailer stayed far away from any kind of story other than the JL interacting and action scenes...there's at least a chance.

Or maybe they just don't want to show Superman yet.

The story would only make sense after the JL had been together for a long time and Super man had truly proven himself to be the ultimate face character. Despite the funeral scene, Super man coming back instantly as a villain would completely validate all the people who saw him as one when he was a hero. Plus there wouldn't be a very good betrayal built up. They'd have to make some weird mind control plot and it would be pretty weak

It would not surprise me at all if he recycled his plot from BvS and had Superman manipulated into fighting the Justice League. Then as they're all about to kill each other, Cyborg says the name Jonathan, causing Superman to have a mental breakdown and they all laugh and the credits roll.
