Why does swagger burn the recording

In shooter, swaggert burns tye recording of incriminating evidence agonist the senator, I never got why did I miss something explaining this. Seemed really dumb at the time.

Swaggert says at the end that the Senator is too powerful and his evidence would just be suppressed.
