Much like the IRL JLD, Elaine was an heiress.

Which got picked up to be a movie, which is how he was able to "retire" and move to Del Boca Vista and run for condo board president.

But even if it was rent controlled, it would still be beyond what a line cook and a barista would be likely to afford.
not really

there are apartments in manhattan right now that are rent stabilized at like $1200 so it's entirely reasonable that they have some kind of sick deal

Yeah, George was pretty resentful of Kramer during most of the show.

Yeah, I think it was because Kramer never had to work but he also never worried about money....ever. He was a mooch, but he never implied he was a mooch because he had money problems.

I think Kramer's money situation -- like most other things -- was a running joke on the show that they just weren't going to bother explaining because that was the point of the joke, just like Kramer's litany of friends who are never introduced.

I always loved the way they dealt with that. In that one scene, Jerry asks "You mention all these friends all the time, why have I never seen any of them? Kramer responds "they wonder the same thing about you!"

George was paying $2300/month for his place which is an absolute bargain for a 1BR apt on the UWS
That would have been a little high in the 90s. Equivalent to $3500 today. Stayed in a place this year on 89th and Amsterdam that was a 2br for $3300

You know my friend Bob Sacamono?

I thought he was Kramers friend?

Well, he called last night about 3 a.m. we got to talking, he sells Russian hats down at battery park, forty bucks.

Forty bucks? Are they Sable?

No, but the difference is negligible.

Oh yeah, I like this idea.

Jerry: (to George) " Problems with the house guest?"

Elaine: "What house guest?"

George: "This friend of Susan's is staying with us for two weeks...Now am I

wrong or is that excessive?"

Kramer: "Well Bob Sacamano he stayed with me once for a year and a half."

Well Jerry moved into his complex in 1989 and kramer was already there. I think Manhattan rent prices didn't really start to skyrocket until the late 90's, which is when the show ended.

I read it, and it's actually a fascinating theory. Like someone in the thread said, it is interesting that Kramer seems to know so much about marriage. Remember the episode where Jerry gets engaged:

Kramer -- "And you can forget about watching TV while you're eating."
Jerry -- "I can?"
Kramer -- "Oh yeah! Because it's dinner time, and you know what you do at dinner? You talk about your day! 'How was your day today, did you have a good day today or a bad day today? Well, what kind of day was it?' 'Well I don't know, how about you, how was your day today?!' NAH!"
Kramer -- "It's a sad state of affairs."
Jerry -- "well, I'm glad we had this talk"
Kramer -- "Oh you have no idea!"
