Why couldn't Watney fix the satellite dish at the hab?

Sitting here watching the Martian again and it struck me as odd he never tried to fix the dish that almost killed him. Was it discussed in the book why he didn't use it to establish communication with nasa?

The high gain antennae used for communication was destroyed in the storm. Seems reasonable that some things are damaged beyond repair.

The book goes into more detail and relays a much bleaker picture of his situation.. The detail is impressive and while I'm not a physicist nor a mathematician, it presents a quality scientific view of the problems and solutions he reaches..
