Why arent some movies on Netflix or Amazon

I wanted to watch Zero Dark Thirty or Lone Survivor today and neither is available to stream on either Netflix or Amazon. I know I watched Zero Dark Thirty in the past on one of these.
Why are so many movies not on these services? Is it all to get me to buy a DVD?

They had to free up some room for the pornographic film library they'll be adding later this month.

same reason HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime don't always air the same flicks forever.
they pay for the rights to air those movies but the companies that sell those rights do not do so in perpetuity.

I don't know. You know what, you should start a streaming service that streams every movie ever made. I'm sure you'll make bank.

FX has recently started showing Zero Dark Thirty.
They show some pretty decent flicks. Prometheus came on last night. I always seem to watch that movie when it's on.
