A friend of mine was the set designer for that show, it kinda fell into her lap. She really didn't want to do it at first but says it turned out to be a lot of fun and paid very well. And yeah, the "reality" aspect is total nonsense. She says the family is hamming it up for the camera, just as instructed; and it was heavily scripted. In real life they are a normal (well normal for Georgia) family. The producers would ask them to add profanity at points and they would roll their eyes and then go ahead and do it. My friend is convinced that the Mom reached the point where she decided they had enough money in the bank and wanted normal lives back. So she found a way to end it that would make a total break without fans showing up at their house for years.
