Not sure what's considered classic anymore. Some "older" movies I really enjoy have been listed already. I'd add these.

30's
My Man Godfrey (1936)

40's
The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)
Out of the Past (1947)
Mrs. Miniver (1942)

50's
From Here to Eternity (1953)
Giant (1956)
The Killing (1956)
A Face In The Crowd (1957)

60's
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
Hud (1963)
Lolita (1962)

70's
The Wind and the Lion (1975)
The Last Picture Show (1971)
The Last Detail (1973)
The Man Who Would Be King (1975)

I typically can't stand musicals. But I recently watched "Fiddler on the Roof", "West Side Story" and "Sound of Music" with my 12 yr old daughter -- she loved them. Forgot how good of movies they are.

I can recommend two musicals to watch with her - Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (the one with Donnie Osman as Joseph) and Phantom of the Opera. Both very well done.

To reiterate a few already mentioned that are in my top ten:

Ben Hur
The Graduate
Bridge on the River Kwai
Little Big Man
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Not yet mentioned but extremely worthy:

Slaughterhouse Five
High Noon
All Quiet on the Western Front
I Walk the Line (the original, not the recent "Walk the Line")

Best "coming of age" film never ever mentioned by anyone anywhere except two thumbs up from Siskel and Ebert:

Breaking Away

Also highly recommended:

Coal Miner's Daughter

Don't be put off by the subject matter (story of country singer Loretta Lynn). I am not a country music fan at all but the film is genuinely entertaining. Sissy Spacek was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in the title role.
