Holy shite there’s a frick pile of people I recognize from later shows. It seemed a little slow the first half of season one but around episode 9 or 10 it’s been great. Can’t wait to start season 2.

Yea it does kind of start slow. I think that also has to do with how many people/characters are in the show.

Im jealous also

Get ready. They are going to continue to add a frick pile of people each season (S2 the dock workers, S3 the political players and a rival gang, S4 school system and mayoral race, S5 the media). It's really brilliantly done and the actors are all top notch; that's why the show catapulted them on to other roles.

Congrats, I'm jealous, and settle in for the best ride ever.

Only thing I'll say is the tone of each season is pretty drastically different. So if it feels like a completely different show in a way in S2 just roll with; it all is connected.

Every time I see a Wire thread it makes me want to go back and do another rewatch. Still my #1 show of all time.

ETA: OP, STOP READING THE THREAD IF YOU SEE THIS. THERE ARE SOME BIG TIME SPOILERS ON PAGE 2.

Often times things get so much hype that you’re left underwhelmed

Not the case with the wire. It really is one of the best shows ever.

So many memorable characters .

It is a good show . . . but I wished that I had watched it prior to seeing all the hype on this board. Good but not great IMO.

I thought the same thing before I watched it for the first time, but it really wasn't overhyped for me at all. I liked it that much.

Looking back at my thread on this board, I finished my first watch in December of 2012. I think I rewatched it twice since then, but not in at least 6/7 years or so.

The best thing about the show is that it's just plain good, and it's not easy to explain why. It's just sort of inherently good. I said this in my OP after finishing it the first time:
quote:

Funny thing is, it's hard to explain why it's so good; it just kinda is. I mean, the tons of different plot lines are almost all interesting, the characters are fantastic, the acting is great, etc. But those are pretty general things...it's hard to say specifically why the show is so good. I had read an overall synopsis of the series and saw that each season focused on a different aspect of the city (drug trade, seaport, government bureaucracy, school system, and print media) and was worried that some seasons would struggle compared to others...but that really didn't happen. Aside from maybe a few of the plots, I pretty much liked it all.

After you finish The Wire, watch We Own This City. It's based on a true story about a gang of crooked-arse cops in Baltimore and how fricked up things are over there with police, race, politics. Six episodes, lot of the same people from The Wire are in it. (Like there are actors who were drug dealers in The Wire playing policemen in this)

What platform are you watching it on? We've never watched it because we couldn't find it but it's on our list

I'm pretty sure it's on HBO Max.
If you live in EBR and have a DVD/BluRay player, they've got all of the seasons on disc at the library. (That's how I watched the first season or two many moons ago)

Fun Fact.
The preacher is the guy IRL that Avon is based on.
One of the big dudes that Butchie sends to help Omar in jail is the guy Omar is based on.
I don't remember if they were in S1 or later on.

I have watched it 5 times and I am about to start my 6th. It gets better every time because you pick up on small things you missed the 1st time around.

Jealous of you. Watched it for the first time a few months ago. Popping The Wire cherry for the first time is an experience.
