That opening scene was like something out of McCarthy. Could totally see this being the cinematographic style of a decent film adaptation of Blood Meridian

refresh my memory, but that opening scene was a continuous shot, right? Those are a bitch to film.

I think it was or at least it was designed to look like one (remember, Alejandro González Iñárritu did the same thing with Birdman; designed it to look like one giant tracking shot though it actually wasn't filmed that way)

Hopefully when every comic book ever published has been turned into a film, we will get the long awaited BM adaptation.

The problem is that it'll be at least a 3 hr epic but I think that a director like Iñárritu would actually be perfect to try to capture the artistry of the writing in the cinematography, as well as blend the immense natural landscapes with the ultra-violence of the characters and groups. The big questions is who you cast as the judge as he will pretty much make the film as characters go. Toadvine, the kid, and glanton could go a few different ways but the judge makes or breaks the story.

I hope you like sentences that leave you pining for a period!

Good read, but it gets tedious at times.

I had just finished reading BM when I first saw the movie in theaters, so it's been a while, but I definitely think if anyone could nail the tone of the book Iniratu is one of them. Would be a slam dunk combo imo.

I actually think the kid from The Revenant, Will Poulter, could nail the role of "The Kid." I see the kid who played the brother in The Witch having a good career ahead of him, maybe he could be a decent fit in 2-4 years as well.

The Judge would be a very hard character to cast I think, what with his complete hairlessness and gigantic stature. I don't know how he's looking these days and whether he'd be too old, but James Cromwell is 6'7" and would be badass for it.

John Goodman could probably nail it.

They shouldn't adapt BM. Nobody could capture the Judge correctly. One of the best characters in the history of fiction.

As an aside, Cormac McCarthy Yelp reviews are awesome

Four stars.

I am going to remove a star, he said.

Please don’t mister.

Don’t move. It’s better if you don’t move.

Please.

It’s important you know why. Do you understand why this is happening?

Oh God.

It is because I clearly shared with you my condition. I cannot countenance gluten. And yet I see croutons here. Do you see them as well?

Yes. I’m sorry.

Do you understand that sorry does not remove the croutons?

Yes. Oh God.

Good. Then we can agree your action has changed the course of the universe in some infinitesimal but irrevocable way. To remove the croutons would not remove the action. You see?

The waiter closed his eyes.

Look at me. Look at me. If you look away I will remove two stars.

Blood Meridian is one of my favorite books and I'm actually doing a reread right now.

But I always thought it was ridiculous to claim that it's unfilmable. There's a LOT going on, and it would be a long movie.

But what exactly would be so impossible to transfer to film? It's a Western with extremely unique characters, settings, and circumstances. Get someone talented to do the job and give it the proper budget. It could be done.

The hairless thing doesn't bug me; you can shave a guy and use makeup and prosthetics to achieve that effect. It's the stature and the personality that is so key. The judge needs to be someone persuasive enough to inspire people to kill a preacher and evil enough to pull off the dark joke afterward that he'd made the whole sort of the preacher up. He needs to be larger than life but graceful. He has to be both wise and crazy.

The challenge of a movie like this is both in the cinematography and pacing and in getting the casting of the judge perfect. Screw up any of those things and it's all shite

What would you think about James Cromwell as The Judge?

I could see him doing a good job of pulling off going from wise, mysterious mentor to crazed, murderous monster on a dime.

He could do it, but his voice isn't right for me.

What about Rory McCann?

Stanley Kubrick directing it with Brando playing The Judge would've been goat.

How is he described in the book mass-wise? I know he's very tall and I recall him maybe having a high-pitched voice(?) and I pictured him as being lean and very tall. It's one of the reason I first thought of Cromwell, who stands at 6'7" and is pretty soft-spoken. Some of the fan art of Judge Holden I see on the Googles ranges from skinny to morbidly obese to being a shredded linebacker.
