So while avoiding the heat and then the monsoons, I watched some John Wayne movies on AMC. "The Cowboys" was one of them and I find it very enjoyable. What are some of Wayne's lesser known movies that you enjoy?

TBH I can't stand watching him. He's wooden and always plays the same character, and that character gets old.

While I don't think "The Cowboys" is lesser known, watch these and get back to me:

IMDB Top 29 John Wayne movies

I am partial to True Grit, The Shootist, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande, Rio Bravo, Rio Lobo, The Searchers, Big Jake and The Sons of Katie Elder. I also enjoy some of his war movies, particularly Sands of Iwo Jima, Flying Leathernecks, The Longest Day and The Green Berets.

The Searchers is as good as any.

McClintock is funny

Big Jake is fun

Train Robbers and Undefeated are lesser known but still very good.

The Duke is awesome. I disagree when people say he plays the same character, he's playing himself. Is he a great actor? No but he's great at being John Wayne.

The Sons of Katie Elder
The Man who shot Liberty Valance
Red River

A few of my favs.

This too is my favorite along with the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

IMHO the Duke wasn't all that good and actor but such a big presence. The less he talked in a film the better it was for me.

John Wayne wasn't an acting auteur - he wasn't a method actor and he didn't wear the skin of characters. He was paid to be John Wayne, so he delivered the goods - over and over, hundreds of times.

On the other hand, in films like Red River, directed by Howard Hawks, John Ford (who had already directed Wayne many times by 1948, and the 2 were best friends) watched it and quipped, "I didn't know the big son of a bitch could act!"

He won the Oscar for True Grit, and ultimately delivered a very sublime performance in The Shootist, which I think is his finest. Without lowering itself into parody, it is a stamp of, "Well, there it is. Hope you liked it." from Wayne on his career, as well as allowing an exploration of the western genre, how it differed from real life and mortality itself. (We see Hank Fonda in an earlier film with similar themes in the spaghetti western comedy, My Name is Nobody.)

So, the fact that he could act, to a degree, is irrelevant. He was generally paid to be John Wayne and that should be reinforced when folks attack his acting credentials.

The fact he has been dead for close to 40 years and we are still talking about him should tell anyone how much of an iconic American film presence he was.

I agree, his presence overshadowed it all. He was larger than life.

The Cowboys was one of his best acting performances ever...I remember the studio actually had a nation wide essay contest on why you should be in a movie with John Wayne and the winner got to be in cast as one of the young "cowboys".
