One of those films where the background of the creators is added to the buzz, plus it's a tiny budget so you have the David and Goliath thing.

I think that if you saw it without the prizes and acclaim, you'd be surprised that it was a fairly good movie.

At this point it comes with a ton of baggage.

Terrible movie. Hilarious that Ali won for best supporting when his role is pretty basic and barely had any range.

Jeff Bridges was MUCH more deserving. He was absolutely fantastic in Hell or High Water

I thought the same thing. Very overrated. La la land was so much better. Shame that affirmative action has leaked into awards.

I agree, but the film critics that post here hated his West Texas accent.

It wasn't terrible. It was actually good.

But it was definitely not Best Picture worthy.

Watched Moonlight. This is the best picture?

It wasn't actually; only in the slanted views of liberal progressive academy voters.

Mahershala Ali was phenomenal in Moonlight. His very last scene at the dinner table was incredible.

Visually it looked like a Wong Kar Wai film. The score was great, entire cast was great, cinematography was great, stylistically it was great with the camera and sounds.

If people believe those aspects of the movie aren't good then I don't really know what to say. I assumed most people would have issues with the subject matter and the fact it's an all black cast with a black director.

Not at all.

It wasn't huge on plot, but it was an extremely well executed movie. I have no issue with it winning best picture.

It was an unbelievably simple movie. It was like a lifetime movie.

Also, why was one it made out to be such a "gay" film? The gay aspect was tiny.

The people making a huge deal about it being a "gay" movie probably didn't see it. Growing up with druggie parent was definitely a big part of the story like you earlier said, but the main point I took away from it was our surroundings deciding who we can or can't be as a person (growing up in the hood you better be a hardass who sells drugs)

I do disagree though that it was terrible. I thought it was pretty good. Not Best Picture good, but good

It's a nice character piece but had no business winning best picture. Plain and simple. It did a lot well, but it wasn't worthy of best picture. Not against that competition.

On this board? They think the Police Squad movies are gay because the main actor's name is Leslie.
