Cajun Man on SNL
The Waterboy

I wonder who's idea it was to get Adam to do a Cajun impression anyway. Like, did he think of it himself doing standup and then brought it over to SNL?

He was born & raised in NYC, so I doubt Cajuns were on his mind very often.

His "Kevin Neelawh", "Vacatianh", "Masturbatianh" shtick was taken from Justin Wilson saying "Onyanh" for onion.

The dude's been in countless movies/roles and you think two Cajun characters suggests he's drawn to it?

Billy Madison
Happy Gilmore
50 First Dates
Wedding Singer
Big Daddy
Chuck & Larry
Grown Ups
Mr. Deeds
That's My Boy

I'm just pulling movies off google as a reference, but I don't think Cajun characters are his go to.

I think he has done more with the NY setting and character background than anything.

I'm guessing he came up with funny Cajun impression which got him airtime on SNL. Then someone wrote a script with that character in mind and we got Waterboy. Not sure it's much more than that.

I assumed he sat down and thought up a way to make his snl characters into a movie. Combined Cajun Man with Canteen Boy and the Waterboy was born.

CCR grew up in CA and have numerous songs about the south and LA specifically. Who cares, if its entertaining?

Exactly. Justin Wilson was the inspiration for "Cajun Man", which became the inspiration for Bobby Boucher. I don't think Sandler has some draw to a host of cajun characters. It was all just a spin off of Justin Wilson

Probably not very many people.

I just thought it might be an interesting story to hear how Adam Sandler even learned how Cajun people talk, being he is from Brooklyn. Was the Cajun dialect that well known nationally in the pre-Internet late 80's? Someone said earlier he had family from New Orleans so maybe that's the connection.

Ever listen to his comedy albums on CD, "The Excited Southerner" was pretty damn funny.

I'm a bit of history buff so forgive me if I sound a little a nerdy, but as a matter of fact television and domestic travel did exist before the internet in the 1980's. So people around the country were familiar with other regional dialects, even if they were a bit exaggerated and cartoonish. For a real knee-slapper, you should hear my impression of a Midwesterner discussing the Cubs and Cardinals game.

Justin Wilson was on TV a lot, doing his bit as a non-Cajun impersonating people he had met during his own travels and in the process creating a popular perception of an exaggerated, perhaps drunkenly slurred sounding Cajun.

To be fair most regional accents are exaggerated in TV and movies.

Most people from Mass, Texas, NY, Cali, Wisconsin etc etc tend to not sound near as distinct as they do in film. Sure, there are certain words where it really comes out but on the whole everyone sounds pretty normal. Perhaps before radio and specifically TV became common in households the regional dialects and slang were much more pronounced but these days most everyone sounds pretty much the same.

This is not correct. I saw an interview with Sandler and he was asked where the inspiration for Cajun Man came from. Sandler said he was having lunch at restaurant in L. A., Los Angeles not Louisiana, and a guy at the next table had what to him sounded like a very pronounced Cajun accent. Sandler thought it was funny and developed the Cajun Man character based on that anonymous guy.

If we all want to agree that that anonymous person was Justin Wilson then I am cool with it. It has to be someone so why not Justin Wilson
