Well, to be fair, there are a limited number of historical documents to go on. Ragnar may even be a mythological figure himself. Many of the stories of ragnar are shared with the stories of King Horric. However, what is fact is the sons of Ragnar, which is what leads many to believe Ragnar did actually exist.
SPOILERS....
Ragnars sons all eventually ruled the scandinavian lands and England. I'm interested to see if History channel extends the show to the story of his sons, or just ends the story with Ragnar's death, and his sons retribution to King Ecbert (another blood eagle), and just writes some text at the end of the closing scene explaining the exploits of his sons.

I resent that. I don't have kids yet.

Yes there is a whole lot of history Vikings could cover. The storyline does move briskly, unlike GoT, but I'm ok with that. I think viewers most want to see Viking invasions anyway, not intrigue in Scandinavia.

Wait, so you're saying Ecbert is killed by Ragnar's sons? I'm not doubting you, but that contradicts what his Wiki page says (for whatever that's worth).

Just from my own recollection, historically I think the Lothbrok brothers, Ubba and Ivarr, came later like around 860. The show is set around 800, so I don't know if the show is trying to be overly accurate.

I hope you get the Blood Eagle for starting this thread.

Is Vikings a low brow, often cheesy rip-off of GOT? Sure. Does that mean it isn't enjoyable? Nope.
I watch New Girl. I watch Mindy Project. Are those sophisticated comedies? Of course not (Although Mindy Kaling is brilliant). But they're fun and distracting. As is Vikings.

Do I want to see Lagertha's shield maidens? Why yes, yes I do.

Jesus Christ people. GoT and Vikings are NOTHING alike.
It's like the people who compare Family Guy and South Park.

I got nothing against a little trolling if that's what floats your boat. But the "overweight dads" thing seems to be telling. You coping with some daddy issues perhaps?

HISTORICAL SPOILERS
That's what i thought i read. Unless i got it wrong. From what i read, ecbert threw ragnar into a pit of snakes (other various punishments), and he was killed. His son eventually conquered ecbert and gave him the blood eagle. I'll go recheck my history, though.

I was mistaken, it was King Aella that killed ragnar.

I've never seen a single episode, but I agree with the OP. Y'all are a bunch of mouth-breathing overweight dads.
Posted on 4/22/14 at 6:39 pm to DR Hops
Exactly, that was in 866 and this show is set about 60 years earlier so maybe they aren't trying to follow the history too closely.
