I enjoyed Down Periscope

are examples of wonderful movies that didn't make any money at the box office, but persisted and found an audience later (Judge and Smith do have built-in audiences, but these films went beyond that, even).
More recently, it gets tougher. I can see how Coyote Ugly
could be considered underrated. High Fidelity
ETA: Good catch for whoever said Grosse Pointe Blank
- I forget it is "underrated" because it is one of the most popular movies at my house.
