I watched the new one on a plane a couple of days ago. I only watched it becuase it was a flight to Tokyo and I needed something for my fourth movie.
It didn't follow the first movie at all.....that being said I was surprised that I didn't have to turn it off, it was actually slightly more than watchable.

This. 2012 was not anywhere near as horrible as posters here like to make it out to be. I think a lot of it is people are nostalgic about 1990.
I don't know this for fact but I've heard 2012 is actually more faithful to the original Total Recall story than 1990. Besides, if 2012 was exactly the same as 1990 then people would bitch that it was the same.
