Even though I think it has more to do with the mainstream success of Sherlock Holmes and sequel commitments.

This Mean War was probably my second favorite film of his, behind Warrior

ETA: The scene at the paintball range when he was showing off had me on the floor laughing

Just because he didn't like it doesn't mean it wasn't a decent movie. Some people just don't like the genre.
