This remarkable edit, by Matthew Morettini, splices together three versions of the same scene. It's the one where Lecter's captor, Will Graham, must beg the good doctor for help in a later case.

It's been filmed three times. First, in 1985's Manhunter, with Brian Cox as Lecter. Then, in 2002's Red Dragon, with Anthony Hopkins. And lately, with Mads Mikkelsen, in the TV series Hannibal.

That was pretty awesome. I watched Manhunter for the first time about 2 months ago, I enjoyed it more than Red Dragon.

Brian Cox nailed the role, no doubt. Sir Anthony's performance was mesmerizing as well, but, subjectively, I think Cox wore the character more naturally.

Of course you did. Red Dragon is awful.

I find Hopkins less and less watchable as time goes on. It's like he was playing Hammibal.

I think the best Lecter debate has been had here several times.

To change it up, I will say that William Peterson is the GOAT Will Graham.

One of the best scenes in the book, and none of the movies get it quite right, is when Graham realizes that the killer has seen the same home video that he is currently watching.

I always thought Graham was the most interesting character, even more than Lecter. I've always hoped that there would be one more book in the series, where facially scarred Graham comes out of retirement again, tracks down Lecter, and kills him in a finale of the same quality as Blade Runner.

I thought Manhunter nailed that moment. The Red Dragon version was lame, while the TV version didn't even have an equivalent scene, because the modern setting forced them to change that whole plot point.

Its kind of amazing how Mikkelsen has essentially re-defined a character another actor won an Oscar playing and played in 2 other feature films.

That was very good. I enjoy Mads version of Hannibal bc he plays the "normal" aspect so well.

Red Dragon is one of the most by-the-numbers movies I've ever seen, and considering the great source material and incredible cast, it's unforgivable. Every creative choice in that movie is the most obvious one possible. It might technically be truer to the source material, but it does it no justice.

Red Dragon pisses on the campy corpse of Manhunter.

It's the most suspenseful movie I've ever seen.

Yes, the musical cues helpfully instructed me that it was suspenseful.

Look, I get the supposed appeal of Red Dragon - it brings back the Silence of the Lambs crew for another round, even behind the camera in some cases (same screenwriter). It's fun to see Antony Heald back as Chilton. Hell, they even replicate the supertitle font in their desperation.

But Ratner translates a rich novel into the blandest end product imaginable. And Hopkins is terrible in the movie, which demands artificially increasing his role despite the story not justifying it. I love how the prologue supposedly depicts him as someone who would have ingratiated himself with high society (which is believable with Mads) even though he's a pony-tailed weirdo acting like a vampire. Ed Norton and Harvey Keitel completley phone it in as well. Hoffman is incapable of phoning in a performance, but he's still squandered on this nothing movie.

Say what you will about Manhunter's 80sness, but that movie has a sense of style, and it's a demonstrably influential movie, essentially spawning the forensic crime genre. Silence likewise inspired the X-Files. But Red Dragon is just a naked cash grab with no real soul, a remake of a better movie motivated only by wringing out another Hopkins sequel. And it still could have worked without a hack director.

To be fair to Sir Anthony Hopkins, he's being directed by that hack Brett Ratner in this scene.

Hopkins fits it too perfectly to me to allow much room for another, especially a portrayal that is physically and mentally different. Cox seems much more ruffian and less intellectual.
