Females (and gays) are not big on war movies....neither are foreigners huge fans of American war. La La Land's demographic is 64% women viewers and healthy European sales... as well as the sector that loves musicals. Hurt Locker was left to be supported mainly by red-blooded, heterosexual, pro-USA, American males... who seem to becoming fewer these days.

It was a crap movie. The only thing it got right was the desire to keep going back.

Would've been a boring arse movie if it was a 100% true to life EOD account. Only scene I really took issue with was the sniper scene

I didn't just do "well", it was top gross movie of the year and won Best Pic. Chris Kyle was a hero, the story is an American tragedy as well as a family tragedy. Clint Eastwood knows how to engage the masses... American Sniper was more of a "drama" than a "war movie".

Hurt Locker was HUGE at the Oscars, and directed by a woman, (remember the big deal made of her beating her ex-husband's "Avatar" at the awards) but did poorly at box office. It's less multi-facet drama and more straight up war flick. Renner's character was indifferent to family, Am. Sniper had a budding romance, wedding, a palpable love story with a tragic ending in front of his wife. Eastwood using Brad Cooper vs. a little known Renner at that time was a huge plus for female interest as well.

I find it easy to see why Sniper appealed widely / Hurt Locker left out many groups.

You're right on the second, moving too quick and poor proof read on my part. Should have been Hurt Locker won Oscar best movie.
